[June Free Report] Deforestation |
---|
by Polina Postnikova | 30-06-2023 23:07 0 |
Forests the size of 300 football fields are felled every hour. Only 10% of the world's woods may still exist by 2030; if deforestation continues, they may all be gone in less than a century. Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are the three nations with the most deforestation. The Amazon, the largest rainforest in the world at 6.9 million square kilometers (2.72 million square miles), is also one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems and is home to around three million species of plants and animals. The Amazon covers nearly 40% of the South American continent. Legal deforestation persists despite efforts to safeguard it, and nearly a third of the world's tropical deforestation takes place in Brazil's Amazon. Deforestation, another of the largest environmental issues, is primarily caused by agriculture. Land is cleared in order to cultivate commercial crops like sugar cane and palm oil or to raise cattle. Forests help to reduce soil erosion in addition to carbon sequestration because tree roots bind the soil and stop it from running away, which also avoids landslides. Hello again Polina! This is your mentor Yewon.
Before I start, I apologize for the late comment.
You have written a report about deforestation, which is a huge environmental problem these days.
It is quite surprising that forests the size of 300 football fields are falling every hour!
I hope we can protect forests for our Earth!
Thank you for your meaningful report! Great job!

Hello again Polina!! This is your mentor James.
I see that you've discussed about the severity of deforestation in three regions around the world: Brazil, Indonesia, and Congo. Among those three, you've focused on the deforestation occurring in the Amazon, Brazil. The vast Amazon rainforest is also considered as the "lungs" of Earth, due to their massive capacity for air filtration. It surely is saddening to hear that a third of our entire world's deforestation activities are occurring in that region...I hope the Brazil government realizes the seriousness of the situation and enact stricter laws to lower the rate.
Thanks for writing such a meaningful report! Great work.
