[July Thematic Report] Global Warming and Climate Change: What are the differences?

by Baekjin Kim | 12-07-2023 00:45 recommendations 0

People often assume that global warming and climate change are the same thing. Since they are both ruining the environment, it is a frequent assumption that people make. Although they are correlated with each other, it is wrong to surmise the fact that is the same thing.

First, Global Warming, according to Britannica, refers to the planet's long-term warming in Earth¡¯s average air temperature. It is often due to the influence of rising concentrations of greenhouse gases. According to NASA, there is a rise since the 20th century (the start of industrialization and mass developments), most notably in the 1970s. Since 1880, the average surface temperature has risen 1¡ÆC. It may not seem like a lot, but it is a massive increase globally. An example of global warming would be that there is extreme weather around the world. If people go outside, the weather is either extremely hot or cold. Countless places around the world suffer from droughts or severe snowfalls. They are the complete opposite, but they both are severely dangerous and harmful to our environment.

On the other hand, Climate Change is more broad. It includes global warming and covers a broader range of changes that are happening to our planet. This includes melting glaciers, rising sea levels, etc. These are all the problems that we, ourselves created. Generating power, manufacturing goods, cutting down forests, and producing food. These excessive desires are just worsening our world.

Micronesia, my host country, is suffering from the elevating sea levels. Due to the other problems that the other countries produce, it is harshly being treated. This is not just the problem in Micronesia, but the other neighboring countries as well. One of the great examples that I saw was the Speech of the Minister of Tuvalu (a country in Oceania). He delivered his speech to the COP26 leaders and warned about the rising sea levels. This advocacy has inspired me to eagerly fight for these issues as well.

In conclusion, climate change is affecting the whole world. I strongly think that this should end, and we must put a change to this.

Hello Baekjin! This is your mentor Yewon.

Before I start, I apologize for the late comment.

You have written a report about the differences between global warming and climate change!
People often use two terms global warming and climate change at the same time, and I think your report will be helpful for those who confuse them!

Thank you for your meaningful report! Great job!

Hello Baekjin! This is your mentor James!

I see you've pointed out the discrepancy between global warming and climate change for your July free report. Many people may not be able to distinguish the two terms, but your report clearly states the relationship between those two phenomena. I also thought that climate change is merely a consequence of global warming, but now I know that climate change includes the average temperature rising of Earth!

Thank you for your fantastic work! Let's keep it up with your next report as well.
