[July Thematic Report] How Climate Change Affects Our Health?

by Tuvimanyu Gautam | 19-07-2023 01:09 recommendations 0

Climate Change is not a phenomenon that is just being discussed in high-level climate conferences and inter-government panels. It is, actually, a happening that we all are witness to. Our lives are getting affected by it in many perceptible and imperceptible ways. Increased instances of floods, famines, forest fires, devastating storms, and rising sea levels are the very visible consequences of the climate change that the world is facing. Lesser known is the fact that we are also gripped by a ¡°climate anxiety¡±, an apprehension about the effects of climate change, which affects us psychologically. Moreover, since the change in climate pattern affects us by the way our food is grown, in the quality of water we drink and through the purity of air we breathe, its effect is much more far-reaching than easily comprehensible.

The warmer temperatures brought about by changing climate has led to an increase in intensity and frequency of natural calamities. This has made certain populations like -the children and the senior age group ( less able to regulate their body temperatures), people in developing countries ( with inadequate infrastructure to face climate change),and people in low-income group( with no access to air conditioning)- more vulnerable. Higher temperatures impact human health and safety. It has been observed that the heat-related deaths have gone up worldwide because of the  impact of weather pattern we are experiencing. Moreover, heat waves are typically followed by a period of time when air gets stagnant and polluted, adversely affecting the general health. Wildfires and heat also lead to rise in Carbon dioxide levels. All these factors combine to aggravate the allergen levels and ground-level ozone in the air. These present severe health risks like lung tissue damage, reduced lung function and inflamed airways. The poor air quality affects the home environment indoors too, and causes asthma and other such respiratory and cardiovascular health issues.

Additionally, the seeping of allergens into groundwater leads to stomach and intestinal illnesses. The toll these natural calamities take on mental health is apparent by the number of depression and post- traumatic stress disorder cases reported in such affected regions. Climate change, thus,  has a huge and wide-ranging impact on physical and mental health of community. Needless to say, it calls for investment in health infrastructure globally.

You have written a report about climate change and its effect on human health.
Since climate change has lots of negative impacts on human health as you mentioned, we should try hard to prevent further climate change.

Hey Tuvimanyu, it's James here, your mentor. Nice to virtually meet you! The topic that you've tackled is incredibly interesting. It's really amazing that you drew a line between environmental problem and our health problem. Your report encourages readers to become more conscious of their environmental impact. From where I stand, breaking down your paragraph into smaller sections could greatly improve the organization of your information. Keep up the good work!
