[July Free Report] Recent Updates in Micronesia

by Baekjin Kim | 29-07-2023 01:00 recommendations 0

Recently, the news announced that global warming was over. However, it did not mean the warming has eased, but meant that the status of ¡°warming¡± was over and the earth started the process of ¡°boiling¡±. Consequently, the small and powerless countries would be affected the most, without getting the global attention. One of those countries would be Micronesia, where they could be in a critical condition by the end of the century.

For the past few months, I have tried to reach out to the Micronesian government, and the schools that are in the island. However, no replies have reached back. Therefore, I tried to research the current status through the internet. Luckily, I came across one of the other reporters who were researching about the climate changes in Micronesia. From Eleisha Foon¡¯s report, it stated that ¡°About 89 percent of the FSM¡¯s population lives within one kilometer of the coast, and buildings and infrastructure are vulnerable to coastal climate impacts.¡± (Foon)

Some of the other cultural solutions were observed by their team. They stated that Mangroves have been used to alleviate the effects of rising sea levels and they had long-lasting effects of protecting the people and the citizens. Additionally, they have observed the importance of education, as they significantly thought of increasing the infrastructure to build schools and medical centers. Furthermore, the team has suggested the inclusion of the study of climate change in their school curriculum, as it can be a significant factor for the country to increase awareness as a whole. She has defined that ¡°Indigenous practices such as stone-lined enclosures, taro plantings raised above coastal groundwater, and replanted mangroves, were set to respond to sea level rise.¡± (Foon)

Lastly, Eleisha Foon mentioned that the continents of Oceania has used these reports for negotiation, and they hope that it would do the same with Micronesia as well. This has encouraged me to work harder to protect the Oceanian countries and protect their indigenous ethnicity.

Hi Eugenia, thank you for leaving a comment. I think as an individual, we can reduce our use of energy and we must participate in environmental acts actively. For instance, we can participate in small events such as planting trees or collecting trash. It may sound boring and frequent, but these individual acts can change the world by a bit, and if that bit comes together, it may change the world as a whole. Thank you!

Impressive article but I have a question. You made mention of that the period of warming is over and the new era is the boiling. With that being stated, we realise that there is going to be a higher ice melting rate in Antarctica leading to rising sea levels and its adverse effects. On that note, how can we as individuals stop this?
