[August Theme Report] Food & Water Security

by Polina Postnikova | 20-08-2023 00:20 recommendations 0

Russia possesses one fifth of the world's fresh water reserve but this water amount is rather unevenly distributed within Russia's territory. Thus, the central and southern regions of European Russia, where 80% of the country's population and industry is concentrated, have only 8 % of water resources.

Poor state of water supply systems, shortage of water purification facilities and disinfection systems, low quality of drinking water generally in Russia and particularly in the regions of the Russian Arctic, Siberia and Far East have been defined in the literature. However, no standard protocol of water security assessment has been used in the majority of studies.

More than ten million Russians lack access to quality drinking water. Sixty percent of the country's population drinks water from contaminated wells, mostly in rural, backwater regions. Russia clean water access for 2020 was 76.10%, a 0.1% increase from 2019. Russia clean water access for 2019 was 76.01%, a 0.09% increase from 2018. Russia clean water access for 2018 was 75.91%, a 0.09% increase from 2017.

Hello Polina! This is your mentor James!

It is heartbreaking that Russia has a lot of fresh water, but it is unevenly distributed among its people. I hope that fresh water will be provided evenly to the entire nation as soon as possible.

Thank you for your fantastic work! Let's keep it up with your next report as well.
