Pollution can be defined as the introduction of substances into the environment which has harmful and poisonous effects on the environment. The are different types of pollution such as air pollution , water pollution, noise pollution , soil pollution etc. Nigeria is a country that produces wastes in enormous quantities because of its very high population.

CAUSES OF POLLUTION

1. Vehicle emissions: The vehicles in Nigeria emit carbon monoxide in large quantities into the atmosphere thereby causing air pollution.

2. Improper waste disposal : As a country with a very high population, we produce a lot of wastes but unfortunately we do not dispose of these wastes in ways that are healthy for us and our environment.

3. Industrial wastes: The wastes produces from industries are sometimes released into the water bodies causing water pollution. This affects the lives of aquatic animals and plants.

EFFECTS OF POLLUTION

1. Air pollution causes by vehicle emissions can result in different ailments like cardiovascular diseases, tuberculosis, stroke and so on.

2. The release of harmful gases into the atmosphere from vehicle and industrial emissions can cause global warming, climate change and acid rain.

3. Addition of nitrogen to the soil in order to increase the growth of plants may disrupt the balance of species in the ecosystem.

4. The rate of photosynthesis can reduce because a small amount of sunlight reaches the leaves because of the high levels of particulate pollution.

5. The growth of the economy may be stunted.

SOLUTIONS TO POLLUTION

1. Vehicle owners should ensure that their cars are properly serviced before driving their cars.

2. Industries should dispose their wastes in ways that are environment friendly and won't threaten the lives of human beings and aquatic species.

3. Government should promote awareness on pollution and its dangers.

4. People should be severely punished if found guilty of breaking waste management laws.

5. Government should ensure that the use of pesticides and nitrogen by farmers are regulated.
