[OctoberThematic Report] Ai, Edge & IOT for agriculture

by Elina Haber | 29-02-2024 22:34 recommendations 0

Why we need Digital Agriculture Technologies?
The escalating global demand for food necessitates the adoption of digital agriculture technologies to boost crop yields and meet consumption needs.  Precision agriculture is essential to mitigate environmental impacts and transition to more sustainable farming methods. Farmers' interconnectedness within the food market highlights the urgency of embracing advanced technologies such as Machine Learning, Agricultural Cyber-Physical Systems, and Decision Support Systems. The integration of cutting-edge technologies like Deep Learning, AI, Edge, and IoT is crucial to overcoming these challenges and securing food sustainability for the future.

What are Decision Support Systems?
Decision Support Systems (DSS) in agriculture are pivotal in aiding decision-making by synthesizing data, documents, personal knowledge, and predictive models into actionable insights. These systems adeptly interpret vast datasets to inform farm management and operational strategies, optimizing resource use and productivity. DSS tools manage critical aspects of farming, including water resources and environmental factors, although they encounter challenges in predicting outcomes for complex, non-linear agricultural systems. Their most significant impact is in the management of outdoor, soil-based farms, where they contribute to refining and enhancing agricultural practices.

FarmBeats is an initiative by Microsoft that harnesses the power of satellite imagery to assess the health of farms, focusing on vegetation and water indices.
It provides farmers with recommendations on the optimal number and placement of soil moisture sensors, enhancing irrigation practices. The program integrates APIs that collect diverse data from sensors, cameras, drones, weather stations, satellites, and ground observations. FarmBeats streamlines the data collection process, offering an automatically generated time sequence that facilitates rapid model development and ensures consistency across various data providers.  Additionally, the system generates metadata that can be queried for agronomic insights, aiding farmers in making informed decisions.
