[November Thematic Report] Sustainable Technology

by Elina Haber | 29-02-2024 23:48 recommendations 0

Certain technologies are concerning because their production relies heavily on the intensive use of natural resources and results in the generation of a large quantity of pollutants, particularly toxic and persistent pollutants. These technologies, often derived from traditional and outdated methods, can have detrimental effects on the environment.

Sustainable technologies primarily aim to preserve natural resources. Improving production efficiency is a prime example, such as the difference between the United States and Japan in converting wood into furniture. The use of compact fluorescent lamps could significantly reduce energy consumption. Reuse and recycling also play a crucial role, with reuse being less costly than recycling, but both are more economical than extracting new resources. Recycling aluminum, for example, allows for a significant reduction in energy consumption. Finally, substituting non-renewable resources with renewable ones, like using paper instead of plastic, and pollution prevention are fundamental aspects of sustainable technologies.

To promote sustainable technologies, it is essential to recognize and pay the true costs associated with overconsumption and pollution. Here are several proposed strategies to highlight the savings achievable through the adoption of sustainable technologies:

- Implement green taxes on natural resources such as water or oil.
- End environmentally harmful subsidies, such as those granted to the mining industry in the United States.
- Offer refunds for recyclable bottles.
- Apply the polluter-pays principle to both industries and citizens, with taxes on waste and polluting facilities.
- Encourage responsible behaviors with green rewards, export facilities, and tax reductions for environmentally friendly activities.
- Realign the tax system, for example, by reducing income taxes through revenues generated from green taxes.

The application of sustainable technologies in agriculture in Lebanon is primarily manifested through organic farming. This approach excludes the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, favoring traditional practices such as crop rotation. Organic products can be found in places like Souk El Tayeb, Healthy Basket/AUB stores, Adonis Valley, and others. The certification of these organic products is ensured by bodies such as Libancert and IMC (Investment Management Certificate), guaranteeing their conformity to sustainable agriculture standards.
