The 2023 tornado season has been on the rise lately, with 1,402 confirmed tornadoes. Every month of the year bore witness to a varied amount of tornadoes that were reported. 13 tornadoes were located in the middle east alone during December. One of these tornadoes was classified as an EF-3 and reached speeds of up to 150 mph. The tornado activity in 2023 was greater in the first three months but lower in April and May compared to the averages from 1991 to 2020. January 2023 saw the second-highest total ever recorded, while February saw the tenth-highest number of tornadoes ever recorded, showcasing an upward trend. March was the fifth-highest on record for tornado activity, continuing a five-year pattern of strong tornadoes. On June 15, there were more storm-related deaths in June than usual. In 2023, there were 400 EF-0, 430 EF-1, 127 EF-2, 29 EF-3, and two EF-4 tornadoes with an additional 226 EFU tornadoes. These tornadoes, as of August 31, 2022, have been projected to have inflicted $1.1 billion of property damage. These storms claimed the lives of at least 82 individuals, which is more than three times as many as in 2022. Surprisingly, the tornadoes of 2023 often went beyond the typical length, in contrast to the historical pattern in which less than 1% of tornadoes in the United States go more than 50 miles. A study published in the Washington Post found that just one tornado out of every 1,100 makes it more than 100 miles and this season was an exception.
