Earthquake and dams? |
---|
In 2008, a devastating earthquake struck China's Sichuan province. It shocked the entire world. The scale of the damages was enormous. Not until recently did environmental experts around the world discover that the earthquake was somehow related to China's massive dam construction at that time. According to the scientists, filling and emptying the reservoirs of the dam was like giving a 3 billion ton weight to the underground fault line, and this was the main reason for the earthquake. Not only the earthquake in Sichuan, but also other places in China had suffered from big earthquakes, and according to experts, dams account for at least one of the reason for these accidents. Many Chinese scientists and activists claim that the socially long-established custom for ¢¯Setting up reckless projects and not accounting for their result¢¯ needs to be eliminated from Chinese society. Sure enough, most of the world¢¯s biggest dams are in China, and many more are under construction right now. It really could be said that this is an unreliable action....Although foreign engineering experts agree on the idea that dams have contributed to the breakout of the disaster in any way, Chinese governmental officials have rejected this argument. No matter what the biggest reason for the earthquake t is urgently needed for CHINESE LEADERS to have a broader view on the prospects of their country's environmental problems. |
