Air Pollution Makes Dhaka City Ihospitable

by | 30-11-2013 12:01 recommendations 0

Air pollution is familiar to the environmental activist. But do they know about air pollution in Dhaka City ?

The population of Dhaka city is 15 million now. And it is expected to hit 20 million by 2025. Centralization of business, industries, education, workplace is responsible for this large population. Air pollution at alarming rate is a threat to all the city dwellers.

Faulty vehicles, especially diesel run vehicles, brick kilns, dust from road and construction sites and toxic fumes from industries have large contribution to pollute the air of Dhaka. Some large construction projects make the scenario worst in dry season. Jatrabari Flyover and Mogbazar Flyover constructions are most painful for most of the population here in Dhaka.

We all know air pollution seriously affects the respiratory tract and causes irritation, headache, asthma, high blood pressure, heart ailments and even cancer. If this trend of air pollution continued, those living in Dhaka citiy will be exposed to many complications.

The air which are breathed by the road users contains high concentrated lead. It is found that the lead concentration is ten times higher than the government's safety standard. The mental faculty of children could be adversely affected by lead pollution, which can also affect the central nervous system and cause renal damage and hypertension. The cost for air pollution is so high in other senses too.

About 50 tons of lead are emitted into Dhaka city's air annually. In dry season (November-January), the emission reaches its highest level. Scientists of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) published the study. The density of lead in the air of Dhaka city in dry season reaches 463 monograms, the highest in the world where the lead concentration in the polluted air of Mexico city is 383 monograms and in Mumbai it is 360 monograms per cubic meter.

How we can minimize the air pollution in Dhaka? Find the solutions in my next report.

Like Dhaka, many big cities and metropolitan have air pollution problems which seem to get worse everyay. May I suggest the local governments enforcing and encouraging local people to take public transportation to reduce the air pollutions. That would be an awesome start.

Thank you for pointing out how air pollution is affects so many people's lives. Here in Korea, we are also affected by the air pollution. I wonder if we know all the health and environmental damages caused by air pollution. We need to constantly be aware of and fighting air pollution problems.

Thank you for the well-elaborated article. Now foreigners(or rich people in China) had started leaving Beijing due to the air pollution. The same thing can happen in Dhaka too.
