Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE script>X-NONEscript> Thirteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2007 laid the foundation for the post-2012 climate protection regime to include REDD in developing countries. After that, the mechanism of REDD is developed comprehensively to be REDD+ including the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.
The empowerment of local community and indigenous lived around forest area is a strategy to succed the REED+ programme. REDD+ subnational initiatives comprise the involvement of villagers and local communities in protecting forest. A startegy to accelerate REDD+ initiative is by promoting and establishing community – based forest enterprise. Indonesia, targeted country to REDD+, has been promoting and establishing the enterprise.
In fact, before forest enteprise is promoted and implemented, most of local communities tend to utilize tangible and intangible products from forest, including for furniture and tourisme. But, in the long term, rural and irresponsible people overtake wood to meet their needs. In addition, natural forest are converted to be agricultural lands which contribute greenhouse gases emissions (GHGs).
For instance, agroforestry which collaborates forestry and agriculture is one of forestry business empowering community. It could be proven by not only helping the environment, but also increasing income of the community through forest and non-forest products. It is in accordance with REDD+ projects, where REDD+ projects must balance forest protection with villagers? welfare concerns and protect agricultural livelihoods.
Another projects is by optimilizing wood waste into eco-products or furniture with implementing zero waste principles such as biocomposite, biopellet and bioenergy. Now days, scientics and indigenous people are engaged to create eco-tourisme by benefiting forest as recreational area. In other hand, multinational private sectors also have courages to assist the empowerment of local community voluntarily through REDD+ projects. Their motivations are, beside of being volunteer to reduce GHGs, to demonstrate climate leadership, to corporate social responsibility, and to promote branding.
Unsustainability forest enterprises will be adversely with the sustainable principles, namely generating deforestation and forest degradation. So, the mature decision and consideration should be affiliated with REDD+ projects which emphasize prior Sustainable Forest Management.
