campaign for tree planting at st. Joseph secondary school

It is the final month in the year 2013. It has been a nice encounter in which we have been able to write about issues that affect us and our environment. This month I shall be producing articles on Tree planting exercises in our country, Sierra Leone. Before the outbreak of the war in 1991, we use to have a wide variety of trees in our city, Freetown which is the capital of Sierra Leone. These trees will hitherto protect us from erosion and flooding. After the war, many people migrated from the rural areas to live in the capital city which has made accommodation extremely terrible for us.

In an attempt to ameliorate this accommodation issue, people have decided to live in mountainous communities in Freetown so that they can build shelter and homes for their daily existence. This has led to the felling down of many trees which has created some serious erosion and flooding problems for us. The government has introduced a new infrastructural package for the roads in our country but lack of trees always ensures that flooding is prevalent.

Therefore as the 11th Tunza Eco Generation Ambassador to Sierra Leone, I took upon myself to visit some secondary institutions in Freetown to advocate against this problem and encourage the pupils to start and culminate the attitude of tree planting in the school, their homes and communities as a whole. This message was welcomed by all and sundry and they have decided that next term, they shall embark on some massive campaigns on this issue. Please find photos of me and the team in preparation for the campaign.
