The theme of sustainable consumption and production was one of the three overarching objectives of the Rio+20 outcome document formulated at the end of the Earth Summit in June 2012. This is also a part of the 10 year framework programme and as the Global Coordinator for Children and Youth at UNEP, I have been working to actively engage civil society in firstly understanding the meaning of sustainable consumption and how a normal consumer can contribute to it.
The Change Initiative in Dubai was recently reported as the world's most sustainable commercial building. On 14th December, they held their Winter Carnival at their premises. My youth group, Green Hope UAE, were invited to put up a booth - there were some other environmental corporates but we were the only youth group for this day long event. Throughout the day, we interacted with the numerous visitors from all age groups who visited our stall.
We explained the concept of sustainable consumption, the need to reduce wastage and the impact of daily lifestyle patterns on an individual's carbon and water footprints.
The positive response and the enthusiasm of all those who we interacted with, at our stall, made it a very fulfilling experience for us. Urban societies have much higher carbon emissions as compared to rural ones and our objective to specifically engage civil society in this regard.
