HEINEKENs view on renewable energy

HEINEKEN is committed to the responsible, efficient use of energy. In their global sustainability strategy, Brewing a Better Future, they have set ourselves stretching global targets for the reduction of CO2 emission.

By 2020 Heineken has committed to a 40% reduction* of CO2 emission across their entire global business, spanning operations in more than 70 countries. The best way to achieve these 2020 targets is to work on changing the culture of energy consciousness inside the company as well as with our suppliers and customers, and not to rely on a local legislation framework to achieve our goals. They are very clear on the fact that they cannot achieve the 40% CO2 reduction target without the use of renewable energy sources. In 2012, a total of 9.3% of their global electricity consumption was sourced from renewable sources. In individual countries this percentage is already different based on local conditions and opportunities they have implemented.

Wherever feasible they are developing or are already operating solutions that allow them to fulfill more of their energy requirements through their own facilities. This includes biogas-installations, windmill parks on their sites and solar panel installations at their breweries both in The Netherlands, but also in various other markets around the world.

Balancing Water Demand

Recognition of the need for responsible water usage has led them to develop a water stewardship strategy. Risk-mapping identifies sites in water-stressed areas, and then Vulnerability Assessments and Source Water Protection Plans help us protect them. For all water they take that?s not returned in a clean, treated way, they work to redress the balance through community or ecological projects.

Commitment for 2015

100% of the production units in water scarce and distressed areas will have a source water protection plan

40% CO2 reduced! I hope that it really works
it would be a large accomplishment for all the members of our planet
Of course, we must develop enough renewable energy sources
to build a better world for us all.
plus, balancing the water demand really seems like an important aspect

This sustainable innovation sounds really cool. Brewing a Better Future as one of their buisness priorities, and sustainability as part of how they manage their business- is really appreciable. If all brands , all corporates start behaving responsibly like this , start looking at sustainability like this to ensure positive impact of their products and services in society & environment, then it's not far that we would have fought global warming.
