Dubai Municipality makes it easier to calculate Ecological Footprint

by Arushi Madan | 25-01-2014 03:31 recommendations 0

I have come across a very interesting website( footprint.dm.ae)   which is an initiative by Dubai Municipality to calculate individual's carbon footprint depending on answers to few simple questions like below by selecting the most appropriate  :

Q1.What kind of diet you take(Mostly meat & Fish or More vegetables & less meat & fish  or  fish and meat or vegetables only)

Q2. You travel mostly by 4x4 or small car or bus /metro or midsize car

Q3. How many cars your family has ?

Q4. How many hours /day you spend in car ?

Q5. How many hours do you fly per year?

Q6. Where do you live in?(Villa or apartment or Studio?)

Q7. How many no. of persons are in your family?

Q8. What kind of greenery do you have in your home?

Q9. You have fixtures for water saving only or energy saving only or water and energy saving only.

Q10. Do you keep water running while brushing your teeth.

Q11. In summers you use AC for how many hours in a day?

Q12. Do you preset AC temp , at what temp?

Q13. For how many hours in a day you watch PC and TV?

Q14. You change your computer (once a year or twice a year or once in 3 years or only when it is damaged)

Q15. You are keen to reduce , reuse and recyle the waste ( Very often or always or sometimes or never bother)

At the end it gives your ecological footprint report by concluding /saying like

"You are living a life as if we have 3.18 planets to support us, but we only have one."

Then it gives Eco tips like

  • Eat more organic in-season foods, reduce meat consumption
  • Choose foods that are produced regionally or that does not have travelled long distances
  • Use foods with less packaging
  • Avoid wastage of foods
  • Avoid bigger vehicles, especially when travelling alone
  • Use public bus / metro more
  • Encourage car pooling
  • Minimise travel by flight
  • Install fluorescent lamps and use energy efficient appliances
  • Set the thermostats of Air conditioners to the minimum comfort level
  • Switch off the appliances and electrical items when not in use
  • Install water saving devices
  • Buy less – replace only when you can?t really use or repair
  • Always choose green products, green choices, recycled products etc.
  • Use non-toxic, bio-degradable products and packing materials
  • Reduce, reuse and recycling all the wastes

I request all of you to attempt this and check your ecological footprint to know the areas where you can improve.
