Dubai is home to over a hundred nationalities which makes it a unique city. But along with such a large urban population comes the problem of waste and pollution. This aggravates the stress on the topsoil which is always under threat here from the natural elements. Residents produce copious amounts of waste much of which, unfortunately litters the natural environment which are not only an eyesore but cause pollution and degradation of the topsoil. The most common items that are littered are cigarette butts, cans, glass bottles and plastic . All these are difficult to degrade and not only do they pollute the land but also pose a threat to the ecosystem.
For the past 20 years , Dubai Municipality has been organizing its ?Clean Up The World? campaign with a view to involve and engage the residents in curbing this pollution. Ever since our inception, Green Hope UAE has participated in Dubai Municipality?s Clean Up The World Campaign. As children and youth , we are the future generation and it is our duty to protect the environment from pollution and degradation. We must encourage sustainable consumption and reduce wastage and litter.
We were very happy that our efforts in active participation in this campaign was recognized by Dubai Municipality when we were invited to their closing ceremony, held at Hotel Intercontinental , Dubai Festival City. The ceremony was attended by several group members of Green Hope UAE and we took immense pride in receiving the trophy from Dubai Municipality. It was also a great honour that I was the only youth speaker to address the numerous other groups and corporates who had taken part in this campaign during this event .
My speech was bilingual i.e. I spoke in Arabic and English . During my speech, I said " Our environment is under severe threat due to pollution and wastage of resources and it is our duty, as responsible citizens, to stop this degradation. We cannot depend on others - it is the job of each and every person to do his bit for preserving the natural resources and the pristine beauty of our planet."
We were also greatly motivated by the fact that our photos and my speech were part of the event report compiled by Dubai Municipality - pictures attached.
