Flamingo

›In the Rift Valley region in Kenya, flamingo population is being affected in the Lake Nakuru.
Lake Nakuru lies in central Kenya. The ecosystem provides for about 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 species.
The water crisis has made many flamingos die or migrate and today, only 1000 flamingos remain.

Causes of the water crisis:
Rapid deforestation
Drying up of the ?feeding rivers
Drought

Due to drying up of the ?feeding rivers? the lake is not well replenished.
The irregular severe droughts cause excess evaporation
This increases the salinity of water in the lake
The salinity kills algae growth which is problematic as flamingoes feed on algae
Limited food for the flamingo population causes death and emigration of flamingos

In Maasai Mara, elephant populations have been decreasing in part due to lack of water
Maasai Mara is a national reserve located in western Kenya bordering Tanzania
It is a savannah which is home to many animal species, including elephants.

Decreasing rainfall has made it harder for mammals such as elephants to stay hydrated
Elephants have started to die due to lack of water (baby elephants are especially susceptible)
This can effect the elephant?s immune system and their food supply
Elephants must compete with humans for water sources
(Elephant populations are also decreasing from poaching)
Let's save flamingoes and elephants!

The ecological balance of nature is very fragile. Easily broken but very difficult to rebuild.
