Solid Waste management is one of the biggest environmental issues in India right now. For sustainable growth, Solid waste management has an important role to play. To manage solid waste, we need to define it first. Solid waste can be defined as unwanted material disposed by man, which can neither flow into streams nor escapes immediately into the atmosphere. There are various sources of solid waste like industrial, agricultural, commercial, mining, etc.
Industrial waste, Hospital waste, Construction waste, hazardous waste, all contributes to the solid waste. India being an overpopulated and a developing country generates a lot of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Per capita MSW is about 100 g in rural areas and 500 g in urban areas in India. More than 25% of MSW is not collected and 70% of the cities lack the facilities to carry and dispose it.
Solid waste causes all types of pollution, damages man health and economy. Prevention being better than cure, should be done in first place. First of all, we should limit the quantity of solid waste produced. Re-use and Recycling of products must be encouraged. Not only they reduce the waste, but also save the resources and green energy. Composting and Landfilling should also be practiced.
Collection of waste - Proper storage bins must be used and the waste must be separated according to its properties (like dry or wet) and the frequency of collection must be increased. In summers the waste should be collected twice a day and in winters atleast once a day. Every person should take the proper measures to produce minimum waste and save the environment for the upcoming generations.

Thanks for sharing , Yuvraj. Management of waste is collective responsibility of residents (by having responsible behaviour and avoid wastage ) and civic authorities (proper placement of differently coloured trash bins for waste segregation at source & arrange timely collection of trash). The organic waste out of solid waste can be used to produce biogas as alternative source of energy.

If everyone develops a self responsibility towards cleaner environment there would have been no issues like solid waste management. Thank you Yuvraj for sharing.

Waste problems stemmed from our not-ecofriendly life style. We buy too many things, use too many goods and waste too many valuable resources. If we become considerate about what we by & use & waste, waste problem will be much improved.

It is a very challenging situation indeed. I agree, individuals must take appropriate measures to control waste & dispose responsibly.
