On 29 March, South Africans joined the world to celebrate the World Wide Fund for Nature's Earth Hour 2014, and express their united commitment towards a more sustainable future. A host of activities and events were held across the country.
South Africa's beautiful city Cape Town, beat more than 150 cities from 14 countries to be crowned the Global Earth Hour Capital of 2014 in the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF)'s Earth Hour City Challenge. A ceremony was held at the V&A Waterfront where WWF South Africa's CEO Dr Morne du Plessis and Mrs Jenny Clover, Senior Manager of ICLEI, handed over the Earth Hour Global Capital award to the Executive Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Ian Neilson
The city was recognised for it's ambition and pioneering actions to combat climate change in its effort to boost the quality of life for its citizens. Vancouver was last year's winner and the winner for this year was announced there.
Factors that led victory for Cape Town included:
1. The city's level of ambition and innovation for low carbon development in relation to the local context.
2. The city's showcase of green programmes and actions other cities can replicate.
3. The city's strategies to reduce carbon development and battle climate change could also help tackle other development priorities such as food, energy and water security.
Other noteworthy Earth Hour events in South Africa included an Earth Hour Camp-out at the Johannesburg Zoo, a switch-off at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, a switch-off and candlelight hour at Sun City, an Earth Hour Pyjama party at the Harold Porter Botanical Garden in Betty's Bay and an Earth Hour at the Green Urth Market in Bloemfontein.
South Africa electricity provider (Eskom) stated that 575 megawatts of electricity during the hour.
Points to note: Let us learn to conserve electricity and save Energy for the good of Mother Earth. Also, our efforts at protecting our environments do not go unnoticed. One day, we would be recognised just as Cape Town was....enjoy the pictures!
