Urban Farming- Planting seeds and seedlings |

Last time, I wrote an article about picking up rocks in a farm next to our city. We were preparing to plant seeds in the soil, and so we raked the soil and also picked out trash. Although the weather was gloomy with a light rain, our team with more than 30 people got the job done in no time. (If you would like to know more about it, click this https://tunza.eco-generation.org/ambassadorReportView.jsp?viewID=9387&searchType=title&searchName=farming&pageNumber=1) So today, I visited the farm again to actually plant some seeds in the soil! This time, I also took a friend of mine to join the activity and share the unique experience. Even more people had gathered on the farm than last time. But before planting the seeds, we had to pick up another pile of rocks as they were still remaining in the soil. We got it done quickly, and waited for a while until the seedlings arrived. After a few minutes, our leaders brought numerous seedlings that varied from chicory, cabbage, and lettuce along with a few others that we didn?t know the exact name. We decided to plant some chicory, about 10 of them. What we had to do first was to make holes in the black plastic wrap that was covering the soil. Then we dug small pits within the holes with our fingers. The final step was to actually plant the seedlings in the top. This was quite a precarious job as it was very easy to touch the roots of the seedlings. We had to be extra helpful not to touch and hurt any of them. Thankfully, we the help of a grown-up, we successfully planted all the chicory. After that, we watered the chicory. I was surprised because others gave so much water, almost drowning the chicory. Yet I soon learned that we had to water the seedlings heavily in order to prevent them from drying. It was a really interesting experience planting chicory in the middle of the city, next to high rise apartments. It really felt like I had done something for the environment. I hope the seedlings grow quickly so that the next time I visit the farm, I can see some progress. |

Maintaining a farm right in the middle of the city is incredible. Here in UAE the farm lands are in Al-Ain, Ras Al Khaimah etc. If we get to go there we feel very good, as if in the lap of mother nature.

Thanks for sharing your hands on experience while planting seedlings. I enjoyed reading your report, Jeonghyun. And of course you did a great job by planting seeds as there is nothing better than seed/tree plantation to protect environment and our Mother Earth. Trees are the lifelines of earth. So you added more life to our Mother earth.
