Kathmandu Municipality (local body of Capital city) has nowadays working effectively in a bid to conserve environment of the capital and enhance the living standard of the people living here. Numerous things and practices are launched in order to conserve and care for the environment of the polluted city. The latest step can be taken as the installation of the solar lamps as the street at various parts of the roads.

In the initial step it has installed lamps at the major place including international airport, and commercial areas. So far 300 solar lamps have been installed along the roadside, and another 300 lamps would be installed at the second phase. The total budget allocated for it is around 400 million and 380 million has been provided by Asian Development Bank.

The government seeks support from the local in this act and the local are very happy to see the approach taken by the local bodies. The solar lamps are maintenance free as it has self-integrated system and last up for at least 15 years. The lamp is cost effective, eco-friendly, fire proof and healthy. It is believed to have good purpose here at the capital where power cut is a major problem.

Other step taken includes the promotion of roof top farming and providing training to the interested ones. It also promotes the utilization of organic waste by promoting hybrid tanks which are useful to recycle the waste. It has already distributed more than 1000 such tanks. It has also brought the idea of waste segregation and as a pilot project it has installed dustbins with specified waste to throw on each dustbin. Management of solid waste also has done by the local body since long time ago , but the local body effort is not effective in this case as tons and tons of waste are produced on regular basis, so the people also should take active participation in order to manage the waste and environment as  a whole.
