Earth day clean-up report from UAE (Smaller Emirates)

Gulf Craft was founded 32 years ago in 1982, it specialises in manufacturing luxury yachts and fiberglass boats. It is one of the top 10 superyacht shipyards in the world. But this company is simply not limited to earning money, it understands its Corporate social responsibility. It is based in Umm Al Quwain. Umm Al Quwain is remarkable for the diversity of its marine life. The emirate is home to the UAE?s largest socotra cormorant bird colony, numbering close to 15,000, making it the third largest colony in the world. It is important to keep their habitat clean.

Organised in cooperation with the Umm Al Quwain Public Works Department, 50 employees from the shipyard collected two truckloads of rubbish from three beaches. ?Over the years, we have been supporting and sponsoring various government initiatives on environmental protection and this is the first time we held our solo project to show our advocacy for a better and cleaner environment,? said Erwin Bamps, chief executive of Gulf Craft.

Another Five star hotel Hilton Worldwide in Ras Al Khaimah organized biggest ever voluntary underwater clean up to mark Earth Day 2014. Over 50 divers from around the country geared up in wetsuits, dive equipment and tanks, trash bags and gloves to help rid the sea off the Ras Al Khaimah coastline of debris and trash. Working in pairs, the dedicated teams recovered over 200kg of trash in just one hour. The haul contained a range of discarded items including plastic bottles and bags, ropes, nets, and other forms of debris. Meanwhile, non-diver volunteers assisted on land to receive the team after their clean up and to assist in discarding the collected rubbish.

The newly formed Ras Al Khaimah Coastal Council have lined up a series of conservation led initiatives for this year and will be calling on additional helpers to lend a caring hand throughout 2014 and 2015 to join in the building and funding of an artificial reef and also to protect baby turtles at hatching time.

I wish to highlight the fact that Earth Day 2014 celebration was not limited to big emirates like Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah but other smaller emirates also were dedicated & shown their commitment towards clean up drives.

It motivates us to control littering our oceans while swimming, snorkeling, or enjoying any other water activity. Also we must keep our beaches clean & litter free.
