Vermicomposting

by | 11-05-2014 23:12 recommendations 0

Vermicomposting operation is to change the organic waste into fertilizer by being assimilated by the worms.
First we searched the recycling systems in our country for the project. According to the information which the Ministry of Environment and the municipalities published, we learnt that only 1.1% of the organic waste could be composted. We saw that although the consciousness work about the recycling is done immensely, the public is not used to doing it. In the cities which are highly populated, the organic waste is stored in the garbage collection areas and cannot be recycled to the nature. For example in Kartal, total collected waste amount is 75985,31 tons between 2012 January-June. In the municipality the organic waste is stored in the garbage collection areas but cannot be recycled fully. The yearly fertilizer expense of the municipality is 126.455 Turkish Liras (53.299 Euros). When the recycling of the organic waste is provided, the productive fertilizer will be able to be used in the parks and gardens of the municipality. According to the protocol which we have signed with the municipality, the organic waste of the public bazaars will be recycled with composting and vermicomposting methods. One of the kinder gardens of municipality has been started to produce Red worm by our guidance. These sources will be used by municipality for vermicomposting.  According to our action plan  approximately 142 schools in Kartal and Maltepe municipalities  will be informed by our school ,  till now 10 schools  has been already informed, the garbage collection cost of the municipalities will be decreased more or less 40 % due to the recycling of the organic waste of the schools and houses.
After our visit, The science Center which is visited by 50.000 students every year, will inform the visitors about vermicomposting workshop that is prepared by us. For this reason, during the year we will be in contact with them. Also co-operating with the Ecologic Producers association (NGO) , questionnaires were given in the organic markets and stants were exhibited. Leaflets are delivered to citizens and also to schools. Especially science teachers of visited schools were ambitious to get involved in the project. Our project is published in the local media and on the websites of Kartal and Maltepe Municipalities. With this aim, 10 schools were visited and informed and they started vermicomposting studies both in their science laboratories and at their gardens. We are planning to get in contact with the Family and Social Politics Ministry to spread recycling of the organic waste among the housewives without being thrown into the garbage but with the help of the worms. It is a sustainable project that will continue all during the year.
ACTION PLAN
The Project has been developed by planning and accomplishing practical actions as follows.
•We gave a questionnaire to learn the conscious level of the public about the recycling of the organic waste.
•In order to work together, we went to Maltepe Municipality The management of Environment and told about our Project.
•To learn the daily amount of the organic waste, we got the average of the organic waste from the kitchens of the students in our school. We calculated the amount of the organic waste per person.  (400g/ day)
Maltepe Municipality visited our school and gave a presentation called ?Recycling?. After this presentation, we made a presentation about vermicomposting.
•In our school , we buried  the  40  vermicomposting pots partially  to the front yard of the school  and  each pot is under responsibility of 3 or 4 students ( names of the students written on each pot) They started to put the organic wastes from school kitchen by intervals and  in 3 weeks we will have compost . Some of our students are applying the same method at their apartments and in their gardens.
•We made vermicomposting pots in our school garden and recycled the organic waste from the cafeteria. At the same time we decreased the amount of the wastes from the school, by collecting recycled materials and giving them to the municipality.
•By contacting science center (Turkey Science Centers Foundation) in İstanbul which is visited by 50.000 students every year, we told our Project. According to the protocol we signed, presenting vermicomposting method was decided to be told during the year. Therefore we tried to increase our target group.
•We prepared our website to give more information to the public and interested people.
•At Maltepe Municipality and 10 schools we made a presentation. We gave our school website to help them reach more information.
•We delivered posters and brochures in the schools where we gave our presentation.
•Our Project came out in the local newspaper and radios. An appointment was taken from a TV programme.
•A factory (Kaya Factory) donated us 100 plastic pots. We changed them into vermicomposting pots by adding the necessary equipment and air holes. We are delivering them to schools that we give information about the project.
•With the co-operation of the Ecological Producers foundation (NGO), on Sundays at our booth in Maltepe organic market, we informed the people of the region and delivered the brochures.
•Since January 2011 we have fed and reproduced 500 Californian worms which we took from a vermicompost factory. Now we have more than 2000 worms. On the presentation days, we gave worms from our storage and talked about the caring conditions of them.
•By the help of Maltepe municipality we could have got in contact 10 schools and more than 100 habitants. And informed them about our project.
•We signed an agreement with Kartal Municipality about composting the organic waste from the local markets.
•In the local markets, the posters and brochures were delivered.
•According to the monthly waste amount table of the municipality, we learnt that they would decrease the garbage collection cost about 40% ?f most of the habitants involve in this project.

WOW! You really did a good job , all the steps you took to spread awareness , implementing recycling , placing vermipost pots .... show your passion and sincere concern for environment . Proud of you , Cicek. All the best for your planned visit to Family and Social Politics Ministry. I like the way you symbolically emphasised/criticised carbon footprint by humans as compared to bird /animals footprint. Also You are looking so good in Tunza Eco gen T shirt in the pic.
