Surprise! My mom woke me up last Saturday (June 21, 2014) and said there were visitors and I had to go share our youth group's environmental activities. I took my bike to Tahanan ni Na Meding, which is a hotel right by Sampaloc Lake. On the way up the driveway I saw a vehicle that had a sign Greenpeace Water Patrol. I'm guessing they are the ones I was going to share with.
I was able to share with members of Greenpeace Southeast Asia and Teatro Marikenyo (a theatre group from Marikina City which is just beside Pasig River). Greenpeace in their area is focused on protecting bodies of water like rivers and lakes. But unlike us, they are focused on industrial and chemical pollutants. We are more concerned with domestic wastes.
I told them all about the environmental advocacy of the youth here in our City. I described our activities like water quality monitoring, sachet recovery, treeplanting, lake clean-up and others. They shared with us about how they use art forms like theatre and dance to make the youth in their City become aware of the environmental problems.
After their visit to Sampaloc Lake, the group went to Pandin Lake where they had lunch and trekked to the twin lake (Yambo Lake) over the hill. They went there to try and speak to the stakeholders and find out more about what the communities are doing to protect their lakes.
It was nice to share with young people from another City about our common interest in protecting the environment.
