Solutions to Ocean Acidfication.

by | 24-06-2014 09:16 recommendations 0

The last few articles have talked relating to the issue of ocean acidification. But whenever we look at any problem it is of equal importance to discuss the solutions to these problems. Therefore this article will aim to discuss the solutions to the issue of ocean acidification. Ocean acidification as we have discussed is a side problem of CO2. It often goes under the radar with the major CO2 issue being global warming. However, it is important to realise that this issue is just as important any the potential ecological and financial impacts we have discussed are imminent and immediate. Hence we as the ?eco generation? must be prompt in finding solutions and analysing current solutions which are in use.

Firstly let us review some stakeholders and key players in the issue of ocean acidification. As we have seen ocean acidification is an issue caused by CO2 emissions. Hence at the root of the issue is human induced emissions. However as we will soon see, the eventual loss is to humans as well. As we discussed, the potential effects of ocean acidification on our ocean food chain would be a huge loss on many levels including financially. CO2 emissions are mostly released from large cities: manufacturing hubs. In fact over 70% of emissions worldwide are estimated to originate from within cities. Therefore, it is the cities which must act to reduce emissions. Cities can take many steps to reduce emissions. First and the most obvious things that can be done is to regulate the number of factories in the city and monitor them closely for CO2 emissions. Also, cities consume a lot of electricity. In attempt to generate the necessary electricity, cities often become heavily dependent upon coal and natural gas generating methods. Cities must switch to more efficient generating methods. For example, the Avalon Peninsula is the most populated region of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, has recently opened a multi-billion dollar hydroelectricity project. This project will supply clean and renewable energy to much of Atlantic and Eastern Canada. In the City of St. John`s and surrounding areas which have depended upon coal energy for the past 50 years, this hydroelectricity project is the next step in providing clean electricity to the near 190,000 residents in St. John`s and surrounding area.

Also, organic hydrocarbons which are used in nutrients and fertilizers wash into the water system. It also creates ocean acidification. Fertilizers use must be reduced to reduce ocean acidification. However, here a tricky obstacle is faced. Here a decision must be made between the use of high loads of fertilizers in farming operation to sustain land based food supply or to protect the health of the ocean. This is just one of the massive questions that face us in the problem of climate change. These decisions are the decisions that must be made by us?the eco generation!

Thank you friends...through researching for these articles i have gained the knowledge that sustainability and balance is of utmost importance! Often times with the massive issues such as global warming these side issues tend to be forgotten...but it is important that we consider them to all stem from the same issue...unsustainable human practices...and they can lll be solved by our actions!

Thanks for sharing your viewpoint , Nitish. Agree with you that at times we need to strike an optimum balance between development and environment and achieve economic and environmental sustainability. Like sustainable agriculture using organic fertilizers/harmelss fertilisers etc

truly said Nitish, there should be initiation from both the public and administrative side to have positive change in this field
