Energy and Sustainable Development of Africa

by Burton Dorley | 22-07-2014 23:00 recommendations 0

Africa has the average over 7% of the world?s fossils fuel sources and the only area globally with recent finds of oil and gas. Further, it has over 10% of global hydro resources and abundant renewable energy resources, but as a region, it is the lowest consumer energy in the world.

The dual energy system of African countries poses specific challenges in achieving sustainable development because it requires satisfying the present and future needs of all. Most rural areas in Africa are deprived of modern energy services and the gap between rural and urban area is getting wider.

We need to have a sustainable development in Africa as regarding the energy level, however there are signs that Africa is presently going through an economic transition, with economic growth rates surpassing population growth rate.

Africa is content with abundant, diverse and un-exploited renewable and non-renewable energy resources that are yet to be used for improving the livelihood of the vast majority of the population.

We as youths are trying harder with the acceleration of sustainable development in Africa.

The thing is, renewable energy is still recognized as 'Fancy' energy resource which can be developed and used by only developed countries. But considering Africa's the most valuable asset is its nature, the wide use of eco-friendly energy resources will bring much bigger benefit after all.

It is very ironical that African nations are resource/mineral rich yet their people are poor and have very limited access to safe drinking water , education , health & transport facilities . It is heartening to note that youths like you are realising this and trying to bring a change. Thanks for sharing this , Burton.
