Green Dhaka City with Green Roof

Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center organized Youth Leadership Summit last month. I was a participant there. It was a three day program where local and foreign youth and speakers took part in the event. To make it a successful one, organizers decided to follow up the summit delegates to find and implement the true leadership potentials. All 500 participants were listed in different groups.

Here are the photos of Environment Group in the summit.

Of course Environment and Climate Change was one of the major issues in the house. I am now in the core executive of environment group. BYLC later called us to be in a competition among all summit groups. We submit a project on Rooftop Gardening in Dhaka city. My fellow ambassadors already know that Dhaka is the second least livable city in the world. Here air pollution is sever. And due to unplanned urbanization, there are very few trees in the city. Again population is so densely. To absorb pollution and carbon di oxide we need to go for plantation. But there are no place to do it. Only we can do it on the rooftop in large scale.

Customer Survey questionnaire is made to find the demand in the market. We do skype conference daily to make the project successful. There is an ancient organization named Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (environmental movement). We sat with a member of the organization. We came to learn more about it. He gave his word to help us in the journey.

We decided that later we will also go for Aquaponics and Hydroponics. But from now we work on soil based rooftop system. We planned to make a document on rooftop gardening system application and development around the world.

We founded a Facebook page named Shobuj Nogor - Green City.

I have similar questions with Pratap. It would be great if you answer his question :)
Is there any green-protected area in Dhaka?

Well written article with the vivid background, thank you for sharing this article with us.

Its interesting to know that there is lack of space for plantation. I have never been to Dhaka so just a query what about the green belts and other parks in the city areas? are there any?

Thanks for sharing! It's great that you have a lot of support for the event in your area (500 people!) Keep up your efforts in greening urban spaces! Hydroponics are, I think, promising :)

Thanks for the detailed report, Asadullahil. Your report shows your & your group's passion & clear will power to improve the current sad state of Dhaka. It is nice to see that you are working on rooftop gardening which is an amazing gardening solution without occupying /wasting extra space outside the house. Current state of Dhaka as you mentioned pollution , least no. of trees-show that there is lots to be done . With environmentalists like you in Core executive committee , I am very confident that situation would be greener and better in Dhaka . With regular skyping , seems you people are tracking the progress and ensuring that what is aimed is accomplished at the soonest. Very inspiring.
