Awareness program at Saint Joseph Academy

by | 24-07-2014 13:47 recommendations 0

On July 15 we had an awareness program and survey at Saint Joseph Academy situated at Kathmandu, based on waste management. This was our third program under waste management, and this time we had the student of class 8. As in the past the students were eager and active to know more about the waste management.
We first wanted to check the awareness level and the waste management initiation of the student and their families at their home. So at first we had Questioners so as to check the status of the students. As usual we total had 18 multiple choice questions and two questions seeking for suggestions and improvements. The students were frank and choose the answers which they thought were right and what they were doing.

The result of the survey at this school is given below:

Level of awareness on Waste management

1)      Well Aware-17%            2) Got some idea-65%     3) No idea-18%

Does awareness program an important role to manage the waste?

1)      Yes- 80%     2) To some extent-15%   3) No-5%

How often have you aware people to manage waste?

1)      Several times- 46%    2) Sometimes- 36%       3) Never- 18%

Knowledge on basic questions related to waste.

1)      Yes-19%    2) Partial- 65%   3) No-15%

Estimated amount if waste produced at home on monthly basis

1)      5-10 kg -37%       2)10-15 kg-30%         3)15-20 kg-25%         4)More than 20 kg-8%

 Waste generated at home

Paper-20%   Disposals-32%   Food Items-30%   Garden Waste-18%

How often do you substitute polythene bags by other form?

1)      Mostly-18%       2) Rarely-52%    3) Never-30%

Are you satisfied by the initiation of local government to manage the waste?

1) Yes-21%   2) To some extent-33%    3) No-46%

We then went on to aware the students regarding waste management. We shared them some ways to manage the waste which could be practiced at home easily and effectively.

From this survey we found out that the students of this school are not satisfied by the action taken by the government, although many opine that the general public  are more responsible to manage the waste. This time we have rounded off the decimal place so as to analyze the report in more easier ways in the days to come. As compared to the previous school the students till well on some questions which the students in previous school found difficult, although these students spoiled the basic questions. The others data although were close.

Such a nice program and such simple yet very information gathering survey. Good job Sabin, you and your team have really done a good job.

There are two distinct points to be noted that children are not satisfied with the government's initiative and more than 50% of the respondent rarely replace polythene bags. I hope your next project will be based on these findings.
