PROTECTING ELEPHANTS AGAINST POACHING

Tanzania is one among the counties in Africa and the world blessed with a variety of wild animals, natural flora and unique natural features.this has facilitate the growth of tourism activities in Tanzania. the wildlife sector in Tanzania contributes lot to the national economy, and it has helped in one way or the other to solve the problem of poverty to communities around the national parks, game reserves, and reserve areas.

Apart from the vast riches of wildlife that Tanzania enjoys, we are also blessed to have the largest animals living on land in which its one of the major source of our national income, this animal is the elephant. however with great sadness the animal is on the verge of extinction since it faces the challenge of poaching, unlike other animals the only living prey of elephants is human beings.

elephant tusks has been a valuable commodity to most Asian counties, for the production of very petty things like knife handles, shoe soles and other interior decorations. it very sad how people are willing to kill such a resource to produce things that can never replace the value of what is lost. poachers can kill up to ten elephants per day only to get the elephant tusks.

the government of Tanzania has put various efforts to protect the endangered specie, but also make sure it deals with all poachers and poaching activities by enacting laws that sanction such unlawful deeds, it has set forth a special unit  through the Tanzania National Parks that safe guards all national parks, game reserves, and reserve areas. also given the mandate to various law enforcement bodies in the country to make sure the problem of pouching is eradicated. also cooperation with communities that live near by protected areas to unleash poachers or any poaching scheme. These measures have surely proven to be successful but more is to be done to tackle this problem.

protection of elephants against poachers is a campaign that should not only be launched in Tanzania but the world at large since the buyers of elephant tusks are mostly from Asian counties and other parts of the world. We all need our future generation to have a pleasant experience just like the one we have had, in order to give them this experience we should all say no to poaching, and we should all practice sustainable tourism. Unless we do this, the future generation will only here tales of once upon a time their lived very large animal on earth it was called an elephant......

Thank you Francisca for informative article. First of all the government's firm attitude on this problem is one good thing and as you mentioned, still has long way to go. And...we all should feel shame about exploiting the nature for our WANT(not NEED).

similar is the case with the one horned rhinoceros of Nepal. Generally, rhinos are killed and exported for western countries. As you said, franscisa,Nepal and Tanzania are very similar in the socio econimic and environmental issues. Thank your for sharing such a informative article and there is urgency of implementation against poaching all over the world to protect endangered species ,if they are to be handled to upcoming generations.

Thanks for the post! Yes, I also read a book about elephants...... In like the 16th century or so there were many hunters for the elephants' tusks since it was very valuable in both Europe and Asia.... They say they were praised as heros..... I guess a big lost in history still continues even now. Hope there are more laws and policies that are enforced!!

Thanks for highlighting this issue which is a cause of serious concern today. Yes , it is indeed very very sad that elephants are being poached for petty decorative materialistic items . We should spread more and more awareness with strong campaigns against poaching , govts to put strict laws with penalty in place to completely eradicate it.

like the giant african elephant for Tanzania, in our country(Nepal) we have one horned rhinoceros and asian elephant which are the gems of our country and also one of the major reasons behind the visit of tourist. poaching is the worldwide problem. we must all work together as poaching involves the participation of more than one country. for going against poaching, international rules and laws should be made.
