Langkawi Knights of Nature Sustainability Camp 2015: The Utara Series
May 2015

An inspiring and action packed camp specially designed for youths with passionate hearts for Mother Nature. Special for youths between the ages of 16 to 25 years old who are residents or are currently residing (students, working youths) in the states of Penang, Perlis and Kedah.

he curriculum for the Knights of Nature Sustainability Camp has been developed with a vision of delivering a 4-day camp experience for youth between the ages of 16 and 25. The goal of the camp is to increase knowledge and awareness about the global and local ecological crisis with a specific focus on environmental and social issues that are faced by communities along Pantai Cenang in Pulau Langkawi. With booming tourism numbers, and a strong reliance on environmental-related tours as tourist attractions, one of the backlash of such events is the impact of tourism and unsustainable business practices on the natural environment. This will affect the resilience of the island to be able to sustain communities and their activities.

The curriculum of this camp with feature speakers that are from Langkawi who are championing sustainability, and will showcase their local efforts to the participants whether through technological or social interventions. An array of concerns will also be shared with the participants. Day 1 of the camp will see the introduction of island-related environmental issues from waste management to protection of natural resources such as the GeoPark. On Days 2 and 3, and with the experts from Genovasi, the participants will be educated on the process of design thinking in addresses environmental issues in Langkawi, after which on the Day 3, groups of participants will be assigned to test their hypothesis along Pantai Cenang with the local communities.

The participants would have to then package the information, knowledge and processes that they have learned and produce a possible project that can be easily executed or adopted by any of the local industry players or government agencies as an initiative to address sustainability in Pantai Cenang. The camp?s goals and outputs will be discussed on Day 4 where the participants will also receive their official Knight of Nature graduation certification and soon after, depart for home.

The reason the camp is designed for only residents or youths that are residing in Kedah, Perlis and Penang is because of the proximity of the issues these three states face in terms of sustainability, community engagement and participation and youth involvement in sustainability efforts in their own backyard. We hope that the Camp Curriculum will expose the participants to address environmental and social issues that are close to their community.
