WASTE TO ART REGIONAL COMPETITION

(COVERING MALAYSIA AND ASEAN COUNTRIES)

In conjunction with the World Recycling Day in November 15^th 2014, the FRANGIPANI LANGKAWI RESORT & SPA is organising a ?WASTE TO ART? Competition. The Competition aims to create awareness about RECYCLE WASTE among all adults/youths and concomitantly encourage their participation to imbibe empirical experience in managing sustainability. The ?WASTE TO ART? Competition is open to all ASEAN and Malaysian adults, university students, high School students and Artists. All final artwork or sculpture will be exhibited at our Resort during the event from Nov. 14^th until Nov. 16^th 2014.

 

THE CHALLENGE

 

The Waste to Art Competition was mooted by Mr Anthony Wong, the Managing Director of The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa. Mr Anthony Wong who pioneered adventure tourism in Taman Negara, Malaysia thirty years ago, is an avid Environmentalist and an advocate of Eco-Tourism in Malaysia.  The primary and preponderant objective of this competition  is to divert people from wastefulness and to lure them into abstaining from indiscriminate  habits of throwing  away used items they possess without reassessing their ?after-use? worth. This initiative invites schools, community groups and individuals from ASEAN countries and Malaysia to convert rubbish into an Art Form of their choice. The message for waste reduction is simply not being amply disseminated by the Malaysian and ASEAN Artists/Sculptors to the masses. The ?Waste To Art? Competition organise by The Frangipani Langkawi, Resort & Spa, determinedly provide the rare platform to Artists/Sculptors to convincingly and conspicuously  connect the masses to the need for qualitative and quantitative waste reduction through the manifestation of their ?Waste To Art? productions for healthier and happier living. The purpose of the project is to encourage the concept of reducing, reusing and recycling and concurrently transmuting their negative approach toward waste, and to distinguish between what is thrown away and what is not. This event will be held annually and for 2015 the competition will be open to international participant.

 

THE FRANGIPANI LANGKAWI RESORT & SPA

 

This reclusive, away from hedonistic living and eco-friendly Resort is situated on a 400-metre stretch of soft golden sand along Pantai Tengah, southwest of Langkawi. We are located 10km from Langkawi International Airport and walking distance to restaurant, cafes, bars and shops. COMPETITION TERM,RULES & CONDITIONS

 

The ?WASTE TO ART? Competition is run on two (2) Categories:

 

•       ASEAN/MALAYSIAN UNIVERSITIES

         

Open to all adult/youth Artists and Sculptors between to ages of 18 and above.

 

•       MALAYSIAN HIGH SCHOOL

 

Open to all Malaysia High School students above the age of 13 years.

 

ENTRY FEES

 

All entries for participation must be registered online and must be accompanied with the following fees of choice:

 

•       ASEAN and Malaysian level participants – USD15/- per person

( equivalent to RM 50/ for Malaysian resident)

•       Malaysian High School students – RM12/- per person, either individually or in groups of 4 persons in each.

AUTHENTICITY OF ART-WORK/SCULPTURE

 

The Art-Work or Sculpture must be the original product of the participating contestant and should not have been plagiarized from other works of Art or Sculptures. The Art-Work or Sculpture must represent the thematic concept of ?Waste to Art? on which the Competition is designed. Each submission of Art-Work or Sculpture must be followed by a short narrative explaining the conceptualization of the end-product produced by the participating contestant.

TRAVEL EXPENSES

 

The ten chosen contestants to the final Waste To Art Competition on 15^th. Nov. 2014 (on line judging conducted between 1^st Oct. until 7^th Oct. 2014) must bear their  own travel expenses to and from LANGKAWI, KEDAH, MALAYSIA or send their Art Works or Sculptures by Courier Service, Postal Service whichever is feasibly correct and affordable.

 

COMPONENTS OF ART-WORK OR SCULPTURE

 

90% of Art-Work or Sculpture must be from Recycle Items, whilst 10% includes bonding agents like, Glue, Screws, Nuts, Tapes, Ropes, etc, that will help to keep the Art-Work or Sculpture in its original compact form as produced, and that it will not engender it askew during the travel or during transit via Courier or postal services.

Upon receiving your registration info we will send you an entry form for completion. All duly completed Entry Forms along with Photographs or Slide presentation clips of not more than 2 minutes duration must reach the Organisers one week before or by 7th Sep until 14th Sep 2014. Once your artwork is produced, you can also convert it to either a jpg or pdf or slides, upload it onto You-Tube or other conducive video sites and email the  link  to our contacts:-

SPECIFICATION FOR ART-WORKS/SCULPTURES

 

Art-Work or Sculpture must not be more than 2 meters x 2m x 2m in height and should weigh less than 15 Kilos. This measurement discipline is being implemented to favour the contestants by substantially reducing the transportation and postal charges in despatching the Art-Work or Sculpture to the Organisers of the Competition.

 

PRODUCTION OF ART-WORK/SCULPTURE

 

Art-Work or Sculpture should be aesthetically produced with quality finishing and there should not be any uneven protrusion of sharp edges in the end-product that might be perilous to the Judges whilst they are in the process of holding it for physical evaluation.

 

EXPOSURE OF BRAND NAME

 

All finished Art-Work or Sculpture should not flagrantly exhibit the brand name or logo of the recycle item that is being used for producing the competition product.

 

EVALUATION OF ART-WORK OR SCULPTURE

 

For purposes of unbiased and effective running of the Contest, the Organisers will take into consideration 20% of the evaluation made by Netizens and 80% made by the Judges on the first day of the Competition (14^th Nov. 2014) for selecting the eventual winners.

 

SELECTED ART-WORK/SCULPTURE

 

All finalists selected Art-Work or Sculpture must reach the Competition Organisers before the 30^th of October 2014.

 

ORGANISERS? ARBITRARY RIGHT

 

The Organisers have the exceptional right to reject or deny any work which it considers not suitable or appropriate for participation. Judges decision will be final and all chosen artwork or sculptures, will by design become the property of Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa.

 

SALE OF PRODUCTS

 

All Art-Works and Sculptures that are eventually sold, the Organisers of the competition shall have the arbitrary right to donate 20% of the price to the Langkawi Artist Association, 20% to Langkawi Environmentalists and the remaining 60% to the  winning Artist or sculptor concerned.
