Rules and Regulations No Purchase Necessary WHAT IS THE CLASSROOM ENERGY DIET CHALLENGE? - Challenge Scope: The Classroom Energy Diet Challenge (the ?Challenge?) is a competition among classrooms and schools across Canada, run in both official languages, to increase awareness and knowledge about energy use among Canadian students. The Challenge will consist of three streams: (i) a Classroom Challenge, comprised of a number of classroom assignments related to energy conservation, with points awarded for completion of the assignments (the ?Challenge Assignments?) (ii) an Energy Diet Challenge video contest (?Video Contest?), which will challenge classrooms to create a video of up to sixty (60) seconds in length which encourage people to reduce their energy consumption and (iii) the Green Your School Contest (?Green Contest? ), a video contest that involves creating a video proposal for a project that would decrease the overall carbon footprint of a classroom?s school.
SPONSORS - The Challenge is sponsored and administered by Shell Canada Limited (400 4th Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 2H5) and Canadian Geographic Enterprises (Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street, Ottawa, ON K1K 4C1), (collectively the ?Challenge Sponsors?).
CHALLENGE PERIOD - The Challenge will open on February 5, 2014 at 12:01 p.m. EST and will close on April 24, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST, (the ?Challenge Period?).
ELIGIBILITY & DISQUALIFICATION - To be eligible to register a Classroom in the Challenge you must be a resident of Canada and a certified teacher of a Classroom (from Kindergarten to grade 12/secondary V inclusive) at a Canadian School. For the purposes of these Rules, a ?School? is an educational institution located in Canada, which is recognized by the Province or Territory in which it is located and includes, but is not limited to, a public, private, separate, charter or home school and ?Classroom? is a group of three (3) or more students from the same School instructed by a teacher certified in the Canadian Province or Territory in which the School is located or, in the case of a home school, a group of three (3) or more students instructed by the same individual and following a curriculum approved by the Canadian Province or Territory in which the students reside. To participate in the Challenge you must be a student or teacher of a Classroom that has been registered for the Challenge. You are not eligible to participate in the Challenge if you are an employee, agent, contractor, or representative of either of the Challenge Sponsors or if you are an immediate family member of or reside with any member of the Challenge Judging Panel. For the purpose of these Rules, ?immediate family member? means mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter or spouse.
- Participation in the Challenge: To participate in the Challenge, individuals must be registered for the Challenge as part of a Classroom by January 19, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST (?Registration Deadline?).
- Classroom Category: For the purposes of the Challenge, Classrooms will be categorized as either ?Elementary Classrooms? or ?Secondary Classrooms? as determined by the Province or Territory in which the School is located. Designation of Classroom Category must be made at the time the Classroom registers for the Challenge.
- Compliance with Rules: All Classrooms and participants in the Challenge must adhere to these Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Official Rules (?Rules?). The Challenge Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any Classroom that does not comply with the Rules or with any subsequent instructions provided as part of the Challenge.
- A Classroom?s failure to adhere to any of the Rules, as determined by the Challenge Sponsors in their sole discretion, will also render the Classroom ineligible to participate in any future Challenge and ineligible for any Challenge rewards, prizes or compensation of any kind.
HOW TO ENTER - General: No purchase necessary to enter the Challenge or to win a Prize. These Rules are final on all matters relating to the Challenge.
- Entry into Challenge: To enter the Challenge, the teacher or instructor of a participating Classroom (a ?Teacher?) must register their Classroom on the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Website at energydiet.canadiangeographic.ca (the ?Challenge Website?) and complete the entry form (?Entry?) as indicated by the Registration Deadline. There is no cost to register on the Challenge Website. Teachers will be required to provide information about the Classroom?s grade level, Classroom Category (either Elementary Classroom or Secondary Classroom), School name, School address and contact information, name and telephone number of principal of the School in which the Classroom is located, number of students in the Classroom, and number of Classrooms and registered students in the School. No personal information about students may be included on the Entry. Teachers must acknowledge that they have read and agree to the Rules by checking the box that appears on the Entry. In order to register, all required Entry fields must be completed. Once an Entry is submitted, the Teacher will receive a one-time email, which will confirm receipt of the Entry. Limit of one entry per Classroom. The Challenge Sponsors are not responsible for late, lost, incomplete, illegible, damaged or misdirected Entries.
- Teachers are solely responsible to review, understand and comply with all applicable policies and procedures, including the policies and procedures of the school and/or school board related to their Classroom, regarding eligibility to enter and/or participate in events such as the Challenge. Any Teacher entering a Classroom in the Challenge or participating in the Challenge in violation of any applicable policy or procedure, including a policy or procedure of their school or school board, may, along with their Classroom, be disqualified from the Challenge and prohibited or disqualified from receiving any Prize.
- The Challenge Sponsors disclaim any and all liability or responsibility for disputes related to the entry, administration and judging of the Challenge or any Prize related thereto. All decisions of the Challenge Sponsors concerning the ability or eligibility of a Teacher and/or Classroom and/or School to participate in the Challenge and/or win a Prize are within the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponsors and are final with no right of appeal or review whatsoever. Similarly, all decisions of the Challenge Sponsors and the Judging Panel on any matter related to the Challenge (including, but not limited to, the number of Challenge Points awarded to or acquired by any Classroom, the proof or verification that any Classroom has completed any Challenge Assignment and any judging conducted in connection with the Video Contest and the Green Contest) are final with no right of appeal or review whatsoever.
- Entry Deadline: In order to participate in the Challenge and to be eligible to win a Prize individuals must be students or a teacher of a Classroom that has been successfully registered in the Challenge by the Registration Deadline. The date and time of receipt of Entry will be based on the time of registration as determined by the Challenge Sponsors. Entries received after the Registration Deadline will not be accepted.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES - Once a Classroom has successfully registered for the Challenge, an online Classroom account will be created (?Account?). Teachers are responsible for all information posted within their Classroom?s Account and must comply with and ensure full compliance by their Classroom participants with these Rules, including, in particular, all rules relating to the protection of personal information collected, disclosed or used in connection with the Challenge.
- Safety is of paramount importance for the Challenge. All Challenge Assignments and the Video Contest and the Green Contest must be conducted and completed in a safe manner and in compliance with the Rules and all applicable laws. Undertaking unsafe activities in connection with any Challenge Assignment, the Video Contest or the Green Contest is strictly prohibited. Failure to carry out any Challenge Assignment in a safe manner may result in disqualification of the Classroom from the Challenge and/or revocation of any Challenge Points awarded in connection with the Challenge Assignment(s) at issue, as determined by the Contest Sponsors in their sole discretion. All decisions of the Challenge Sponsors concerning the ability or eligibility of a Teacher and/or Classroom to participate, or continue to participate, in the Challenge and/or win a Prize or be awarded any Challenge Points, are within the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponsors and are final with no right of appeal or review whatsoever.
- The Challenge Website will link to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Teachers are encouraged to use their own social media and blogs to promote the Challenge. Teachers can use social media to involve their community in Classroom Assignments and initiatives, share ideas and best practices, and create a dynamic community of interest among Classrooms participating in the Challenge (subject to any applicable School or School Board policies or codes of conduct related to the use of social media).
- Teachers shall not make any announcement concerning the Challenge results without the prior approval of the Challenge Sponsors.
- Teachers may be contacted by the Challenge Sponsors to speak to national and local media about their Classroom?s participation in the Challenge. While participation in media interviews is at the Teacher?s discretion, and will not be a factor in determining Prize winners, the Challenge Sponsors encourage Teachers to participate fully in any opportunities to further educate Canadians about the importance of energy literacy and conservation (subject to any of their own School policies concerning media relations).
- Teachers, Classrooms, Students, Schools and School principals shall not defame or otherwise damage or attempt to damage or undermine the reputation of either of the Challenge Sponsors or Challenge participants.
- Teachers must be truthful about completion of Classroom Assignments and any results achieved during the Challenge. Falsification of documents or tampering with Challenge-related data is strictly prohibited and may, at the Challenge Sponsors? sole discretion, result in disqualification of the Classroom from the Challenge. All decisions of the Challenge Sponsors concerning the ability or eligibility of a Teacher and/or Classroom to participate or continue to participate in the Challenge, earn Challenge Points and/or win a Prize are within the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponsors and are final with no right of appeal or review whatsoever.
CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENTS - During the Challenge Period various assignments with corresponding lesson plans (the ?Challenge Assignments?) will be posted on the Challenge Website. A point value of 5, 10, or 15 will be attributed to each Challenge Assignment for the respective first, second, and third Assignment level completed (the ?Challenge Points?). The Classroom Teacher must register the completion of only one point level for each Challenge Assignment on the Challenge Website. Once the completion of a Challenge Assignment has been approved on-line by the Challenge Sponsors, the corresponding Challenge Points for that Challenge Assignment will be credited to the Classroom.
- Classrooms participating in the Challenge are expected to follow all guidelines provided by the Challenge Sponsors, with safety in mind, and comply with all applicable laws during the course of the Challenge.
- All information relating to Challenge Assignments will be available on the Challenge Website and through each Classroom?s Account.
- Classrooms are encouraged to complete Challenge Assignments based on the tips and resources provided by the Challenge Sponsors on the Challenge Website. Teachers will not be expected or required to purchase any extra supplies or materials to participate in the Challenge and the Challenge Sponsors are not responsible for any costs associated with completion of any Challenge Assignment.
- Teachers must provide proof of completion of Challenge Assignments as determined by the Challenge Sponsors. This may include (but is not limited to) uploading photos of completed Challenge Assignments or examples of student work from the Challenge Assignments to the Challenge Website. Challenge Sponsors reserve their right to require supplementary proof of completion of any Challenge Assignment. Failure to provide such further proof may result in retraction of any Challenge Points awarded for a particular Challenge Assignment and/or disqualification of the Classroom from the Challenge at the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponsors.
VIDEO CONTEST - The Video Contest is comprised of an Elementary School Category and a Secondary School Category. Classrooms that wish to participate in the Video Contest must complete and submit a video that complies with sections 29-33 below (?Classroom Video?) and an online form, of no more than 500 words, describing the theme of their submission, and how the video was produced. This online form will be visible to the general public and must be student-driven.
- The Classroom Videos and online form must be completed and uploaded to the Challenge Website by 11:59:59 a.m. EST on April 6, 2014 (the ?Video Deadline?). The date and time of receipt of the Video Contest submissions will be based on the time of online receipt as determined by the Challenge Sponsors. Video Contest entries received after the Video Deadline will not be accepted or considered.
- The Challenge Sponsors are not responsible for any lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, malfunctioning or illegal Classroom Videos. Classroom Videos will not be returned.
- Classroom Videos may not be longer than sixty (60) seconds in length, and may be in English and/or French. Videos submitted longer than sixty (60) seconds in length will not be judged beyond the first sixty (60) seconds.
- The content of Classroom Videos must be original, must not contain copyrighted material, and must not be defamatory, offensive, vulgar, or illegal, as determined solely by the Judging Panel.
- Classroom Videos must be written, produced and recorded solely by the members of the Classroom submitting the Classroom Video.
- Classroom Videos may not include images, music, lyrics, or other licensed images or audio without the creator?s consent and may not include video content that has been previously published or is pending publication.
- Consent forms/media releases and other waivers, as required by the Challenge Sponsors, (collectively ?Media Release?) must be completed for all persons appearing in a Classroom Video. Teachers are responsible for printing required Media Releases and keeping them on file. Upon submitting the Classroom Video, Teachers must also accept the terms and conditions for the Video Contest. Failure to complete and file any required Media Release at the time the Classroom Video is submitted may result in disqualification of the Classroom from the Video Contest and forfeiture of any Prize, as solely determined by the Challenge Sponsors. The Challenge Sponsors may require proof of completed Media Releases at any time after Classroom Video submission
- Public Voting for Classroom Videos: Following the Video Deadline, all eligible Classroom Videos will be posted on the Challenge Website for public voting. Voting will be open to the public on April 7, 2014 at 12:01 p.m. EST and close on April 24, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST (the ?Voting Period?). Votes submitted outside of the Voting Period will not be counted.
- Casting Votes: No purchase necessary and no charge to vote. To cast a vote, visit the Challenge Website and watch a Classroom Video from start to finish. At the end of the Classroom Video a ?vote? button will appear and the viewer may vote for the particular Classroom Video by clicking on ?vote?. A confirmation will then appear asking the viewer to confirm the vote by clicking on ?yes?. NOTE: only one vote may be cast per device for each Classroom Video per day. If the selected Classroom Video is not viewed in its entirety or the viewer is determined to have previously voted for the selected Classroom Video within a 24 hour period, the ?vote? option will not appear.
- The Challenge Sponsors shall not be liable for the failure of submission of any vote. Altering, tampering with, or otherwise interfering with the public voting process by Challenge participant(s) will result in disqualification of the Classroom in which the participant is registered and forfeit of any Prize, at the sole discretion of the Challenge Sponsors. Multiple votes by the same viewer/user that do not comply with section 35 above, as determined by the Challenge Sponsors, will not be counted.
- Video Finalists: At the conclusion of the Voting Period, the ten (10) Classrooms that submitted a Classroom Video that received the top10 number of public votes in each Classroom Category, (the ?Video Finalists?) will be judged by a judging panel comprised of representatives of each of the Contest Sponsors (the ?Judging Panel?). The Judging Panel will follow the guidelines outlined in a judging rubric based on the categories and criteria outlined below. In the event of a tie for the top ten Classroom Videos in either Classroom Category, the Challenge Sponsors will conduct a random draw among the tied Classroom Videos to determine the Video Finalists.
- Video Finalists Judging: Video Finalists in each of the two Classroom Categories will receive a score from each judge on the Judging Panel in the following two categories 1) Creativity & Originality, and 2) Production Value. Creativity & Originality will consist of 5 criteria, with each criterion receiving a score of 1 to 5 (low to high), for a possible score of up to 25. Production Value will consist of 2 criteria, with each criterion receiving a score of 1 to 5 (low to high), for a possible score of up to 10. Each judge on the Judging Panel will submit a total score out of 35 for each Video Finalist. The sum of the judges? scores for each Video Finalist will be divided by the number of judges on the Judging Panel to obtain a Final Average Score for each Video Finalist. The Video Finalist in each of the Classroom Categories with the highest Final Average Score will be eligible to receive the Video Contest Grand Prize.
- Challenge participants consent to the use, editing, and publication of their Classroom Video by the Challenge Sponsors in their sole discretion, including publication of the name(s) of the Teacher and students appearing in the Classroom Video. Such use includes, but is not limited to, future promotions, advertising campaigns and/or marketing materials of either of the Challenge Sponsors. By participating in the Challenge, Classrooms and all Challenge participants relinquish any and all publishing rights associated with the Classroom Video and shall not receive any payment, royalty or any other compensation from the Challenge Sponsors for use or publication of a Classroom Video.
- All costs associated with making and submitting a Classroom Video are the Classroom?s responsibility. The Challenge Sponsors will not reimburse or be responsible for any costs incurred in making or submitting any Classroom Video.
GREEN YOUR SCHOOL CONTEST - To be eligible to enter the Green Contest, a Classroom must have successfully completed the ?Green Your School? Challenge Assignment and have been awarded the 15 points associated with that assignment. Completion of the ?Green Your School? Challenge Assignment requires the Classroom to complete an online application form for a project that would decrease the overall carbon footprint of their school. The application form includes terms of participation in the Green Contest and must be accompanied by approval from the Classroom?s School principal (or the equivalent, if the School does not have a principal, such as a home school). Once the on-line form is completed and submitted, the Classroom will be given the option to enter the Green Contest. By clicking the applicable box, the Classroom will be entered.
- Green Contest Requirements: Once successfully entered, Classrooms will be required to create a video (the ?Green Video?) in support of their project. The intention of the Green Video is to further define the Classroom?s project and to garner support from the community. There is no time limit on the length of the Green Video. The style, message, length and direction of the Green Video are all to be determined by the Classroom. Green Videos submitted for the Green Contest may be uploaded to the Challenge Website through the Classroom?s Account starting after the Classroom has been entered into the Green Contest and no later than April 6, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST.
- Consent forms/media releases and other waivers, as required by the Challenge Sponsors, (collectively ?Media Release?) must be completed for all persons appearing in their Green Video. Teachers are responsible for printing required Media Releases and keeping them on file. Upon submitting the Green Video, Teachers must also accept the terms and conditions for participating in the Green Contest. Failure to complete and file any Media Release at the time the Green Video is submitted may result in disqualification of the Classroom from the Green Contest and forfeiture of any Prize, as solely determined by the Challenge Sponsors. The Challenge Sponsors may ask for proof of completion of any required Media Releases at any time after Green Video submission.
- Public Voting: Green Videos and the associated project descriptions will be visible online and open to public voting from April 7, 2014 at 12:01 p.m. EST to April 24, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST.
- Casting Votes: No purchase necessary and no charge to vote. To cast a vote, visit the Challenge Website and watch a Green Video from start to finish. At the end of the Green Video a ?vote? button will appear and the viewer may vote for the particular Green Video by clicking on ?vote?. A confirmation will then appear asking the viewer to confirm the vote by clicking on ?yes?. NOTE: only one vote may be cast for each Green Video per device per day. If the selected Green Video is not viewed in its entirety or the viewer is determined to have previously voted for the selected Green Video within a 24 hour period, the ?vote? option will not appear.
- At the conclusion of the Voting Period, the Classrooms that submitted the ten (10) Green Videos with the greatest number of public votes (the ?Green Video Finalists?) will be judged by the Judging Panel. In the event of a tie for the top ten Green Videos, the Challenge Sponsors will conduct a random draw among the tied Green Videos to determine the Green Video Finalists.
- Green Video Finalist Judging: Green Video Finalists will receive a score from each judge on the Judging Panel in the following categories:
- Feasibility of Project
- Impact to the School
- Quality of Submission
The Feasibility of the Project will consist of 5 criteria, with each criterion receiving a score of 1 to 5 (low to high), for a possible score of up to 25. The Impact to the School will consist of 5 criteria, with each criterion receiving a score of 1 to 5 (low to high), for a possible score of up to 25. The Quality of Submission will consist of 3 criteria, with each criterion receiving a score of 1 to 5 (low to high), for a possible score of up to 15. Each judge on the Judging Panel will submit a total score out of 65 for each Green Video Finalist. The sum of the judges? scores for each Green Video Finalist will be divided by the number of judges on the Judging Panel to obtain a Final Average Score for each Green Video Finalist. The Green Video Finalist with the highest Final Average Score will be eligible to receive the Green Your School Top Prize. The Green Video Finalists with the second and third highest scores will be eligible to receive the Green Your School Runner-Up Prizes. In the event of a tie for the Green Your School Top Prize or the Green Your School Runner-Up Prizes, the Challenge Sponsors will conduct a random draw among the tied Green Video Finalists to determine the Winners. - Green Contest participants consent to the use, editing, and publication of their Green Video by the Challenge Sponsors in their sole discretion, including publication of the name(s) of the Teacher and students appearing in the Green Video. Such use includes, but is not limited to, future promotions, advertising campaigns and/or marketing materials of either of the Challenge Sponsors. By participating in the Green Contest, Classrooms and all participants relinquish any and all publishing rights associated with the Green Video and shall not receive any payment, royalty or any other compensation from the Challenge Sponsors for use or publication of a Green Video.
- All costs associated with making and submitting a Green Video are the Classroom?s responsibility. The Challenge Sponsors will not reimburse or be responsible for any costs incurred in making or submitting any Green Video.
- Energy Educator of the Year Award: The Sponsors of the CEDC appreciate the amount of work and dedication that educators put into their classrooms annually. This year, four Teachers will be named Energy Educators of the Year based on their contributions to the Challenge and their impact on increasing energy literacy.
- Eligibility: To be eligible to win an Energy Educator of the Year Award a Teacher must be nominated through the Challenge Website, be an active participant in the Challenge, and have made a significant contribution to increasing energy literacy.
- Nomination: Nominations may be made by other educators, students, parents or members of the community, and must be submitted through the Challenge Website between February 4, 2014 and 11:59 p.m. on April 24, 2014. Nominations must include the following:
- A current C.V. of the nominated Teacher
- Two reference letters in support of the nominated Teacher and
- A completed nomination form.
PRIVACY - Privacy is of paramount importance. Teachers are responsible for ensuring that no personal information about students or other identifiable individuals is shared publicly (via the Challenge Website or otherwise) as part of the Challenge, unless the required consent has been received. Personal information is any information about an identifiable individual and includes any information that can or may be used to identify an individual. It is also the responsibility of the Teacher to be familiar with and abide by the privacy rules and regulations of their School.
- Teachers who wish to use personal information about students or other individuals as part of the Challenge must obtain parental prior consent to do so. For students under that age of 18, Teachers may use the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Minor Consent Form (?Consent Form?), which will be available on the Challenge Website.
- Consent Forms must be completed in full and signed by a custodial parent or guardian prior to the Teacher publicly sharing photos, videos, examples of students? work, or other personal information about students. The Consent Forms must be retained by the Teacher for a minimum of one (1) year following the end of the Challenge and must be provided to the Challenge Sponsors upon request. Failure to provide the Consent Forms upon request may result in disqualification of the Classroom or School from the Challenge and forfeiture of any Prize.
- Teachers are responsible for keeping Consent Forms in a secure location for the duration of the Challenge and as required thereafter and providing Consent Forms to the Challenge Sponsors upon request or to other authorities, should proof of parental consent be required.
- The collection, use and disclosure of information, including personal information, in connection with the Challenge is further outlined in the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Privacy Policy.
PRIZES & PRIZE SELECTION - Prizes will be awarded for the Classroom Challenges, Video Contest, Green Contest, and Energy Educator of the Year (each a ?Prize? and collectively the ?Prizes?). Details of the Prizes and the Prize winner selection process are set out below:
- A total of forty-three (43) Prizes will be awarded for the Challenge: twenty-five (25) Challenge Prizes, seven (7) Point Level Prizes, one (1) Most Points Prize, one (1) Top School Prize, one (1) Elementary Classroom Video Prize, one (1) Secondary Classroom Video Prize, one (1) Green Contest Prize, two (2) Green Your School Runner-Up Prizes, and four (4) Energy Educator of the Year Awards.
- Chances of winning a Classroom Challenge Prize will depend on the number of Classrooms that enter the Challenge and the number of Challenge Points accumulated by each Classroom.
- To be eligible to win any of the Challenge Prizes, a Classroom must accumulate at least 30 Challenge Points for completed Challenge Assignments during the Challenge Period and, with respect to determining the Top School Prize, a School?s percentage of participation will be based only on Classrooms that have accumulated at least 30 Challenge Points regardless of the actual number of registered Classrooms. The final determination of the number of Challenge Points each Classroom has accumulated will be made by the Challenge Sponsors, with no right of appeal or review.
- Challenge Assignment Prize: 25 to be awarded each consisting of a one-hundred dollar ($100.00) pre-paid Visa? Gift Card. (Approximate retail value of $2,500 – one prize for each of the 25 challenges)
Selection of Potential Winner: - One Challenge Assignment Prize will be awarded for each of the 25 Challenge Assignments. A Challenge Assignment Prize potential winner for each Challenge Assignment will be selected by random draw from all Classrooms that successfully completed that Challenge Assignment, were awarded the associated points, and that obtained the minimum overall points set out above.
- Selected Classrooms for a Challenge Assignment are also eligible to receive other Prizes.
- Point Level Prizes: 7 to be awarded, each consisting of a pre-paid Visa? Gift Card. The value of each Point Level Prize is set out in the table below. (Total approximate retail value of the Point Level Prizes is $8,550.00)

Selection of Most Points Prize Potential Winner - The Classroom that accumulates the most Challenge Points during the Challenge Period, as determined by the Contest Sponsors, out of all Classrooms in both Classroom Categories, will be selected as the potential winner of the Most Points Prize. If there is a tie for Classrooms with the highest number of Challenge Points accumulated, a Classroom will be selected by random draw at 13:00 EST on April 30, 2014 at the offices of Canadian Geographic (Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street, Ottawa, ON K1K 4C1) from all Classrooms tied for the highest accumulated Challenge Points.
- The Teacher of the Selected Entrant for the Most Points Prize will be notified by telephone and electronic mail on April 30, 2014 by 15:00 EST.
- Upon the winner being declared, The Challenge Sponsors will send the Most Points Prize to the winning Classroom via courier or other secure means as determined by the Challenge Sponsors.
- Within thirty (30) days of being a Classroom being declared the Most Points Prize winner, the winning Classroom?s Teacher must notify the Challenge Sponsors of the name of the registered Canadian charity to which the winning Classroom wishes the donation be made.
- Top School Prize: One awarded, consisting of one-thousand dollars ($1,000.00) in the form of a pre-paid Visa? Gift Card to be used for a school celebration, three-thousand two-hundred fifty dollars ($3,250.00) in the form of a pre-paid Visa? Gift to be used for school supplies and a one-thousand dollar ($1,000.00) donation made by the Challenge Sponsors on behalf of the winning School to a Canadian charity as determined by the principal of the winning School. (Approximate retail value of $4,250.00 and $1,000.00 in charitable contributions).
Selection of Top School Prize potential Winner - To be eligible for the Top School Prize, a School must be registered as a school by the Province or Territory in which it is located, be run by a principal certified in that Province or Territory, and have a minimum of one (1) other registered Teacher. The total number of classrooms in the School must be registered by the School principal on the Challenge Website by the Registration Deadline.
- The eligible School with the highest percentage of registered Classrooms in the Challenge out of the total number of classrooms in the School will be selected as the potential winner of the Top School Prize. In the event that there is a tie for the potential winner of the Top School Prize, the potential winner will be selected by random draw at 13:00 EST on April 30, 2014 at the offices of Canadian Geographic (Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street, Ottawa, ON K1K 4C1) from all tied Schools.
- The principal of the potential winning School for the Top School Prize will be notified by telephone on April 30, 2014 by 15:00 EST.
- Within thirty (30) days of being declared the Top School Prize winner. the principal of the winning School must notify the Challenge Sponsors of the name of the registered Canadian charity to which the winning School wishes the donation be made.
- Video Contest Grand Prize: two (2) awarded, each consisting of two-thousand five-hundred dollars ($2,500.00) in the form of a pre-paid Visa? Gift to be used for educational technology or supplies for the winning Classroom, as determined by the Teacher of the winning Classroom. (Approximate retail value of the Video Contest Grand Prize is $2,500.00).
Selection of Video Contest Grand Prize Potential Winner - Two Video Contest Grand Prizes will be awarded, one in the Elementary School Category and one in the Secondary School Category.
- The Video Finalist in each of the two Classroom Categories that submitted the Classroom Video obtaining the highest score by the Judging Panel in its respective Classroom Category will be selected as a potential winner of the Video Contest Grand Prize. In the event that there is a tie in a Classroom Category for the potential winner of the Classroom Video Grand Prize, the potential winner will be selected by random draw at 13:00 EST on April 30, 2014 at the offices of Canadian Geographic (Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street, Ottawa, ON K1K 4C1) from all tied Video Finalists in the applicable Classroom Category. The Teacher of the potential winning Classroom for a Video Contest Grand Prizes in each of the Classroom Categories will be notified by email and telephone on April 30, 2014 by 15:00 EST.
- Once the winners of the Video Contest Grand Prize are declared, the winning Classroom Videos will also receive national public exposure through Canadian Geographic and potentially via other events or media outlets.
- The Challenge Sponsors will send each of the Video Contest Grand Prizes to the Classroom winners via courier or other secure means as determined by the Challenge Sponsors.
- Chances of winning a Video Contest Grand Prize will depend on the overall quality of the Classroom Videos received and on the results of the public voting in connection with the Video Contest.
- Green Contest Prizes: Top Prize: one awarded, consisting of ten-thousand dollars ($10,000) to be used towards the implementation of the proposed project submitted in the Green Contest by the winning Classroom. Runner-Up Prizes: two (2) awarded, each consisting of a seven-hundred fifty dollar ($750.00) donation made by the Challenge Sponsors on behalf of each Runner-up Prize winner to a Canadian charity as determined by each winning Classroom. (Approximate retail value of Top Prize is $10,000.00 and Runner-up Prize is $1,500 in charitable contributions)
Selection of Green Contest Potential Winners - The Green Video Finalist that received the highest combined public votes and Judging Panel score, weighted 60% on public votes and 40% on Judging Panel score, will be selected as the potential winner of the Green Contest Top Prize.
- The Green Video Finalists that receive the 2nd and 3rd highest combined public votes and Judging Panel score, weighted 60% on public votes and 40% on Judging Panel score, will be selected as the potential winners of the Green Contest Runner-up Prize.
- The Teachers of the potential winning Classrooms of the Green Contest Top Prize and Runner-Up Prizes will be notified by electronic mail and telephone on April 30, 2014 by 15:00 EST.
- Once the winners of the Green Contest Top Prize and Runner-Up Prizes are declared, the winning Green Videos will also receive national public exposure through Canadian Geographic and potentially via other events or media outlets.
- The Challenge Sponsors will send the Green Contest Top Prize and Runner-Up Prizes to the Classroom winners via courier or other secure means as determined by the Challenge Sponsors.
- The Green Your School Top Prize Winner must use the entirety of the Top Prize for the Green Your School project as outlined in the winning Classroom?s Green Video (the ?Project?). Challenge Sponsors will remain in contact with the winning Classroom?s Teacher to ensure that the Green Contest Top Prize is used towards the Project. The Challenge Sponsors reserve the right to revoke the Green Contest Top Prize if the winning Classroom does not comply with the above terms.
- Chances of winning a Green Contest Top Prize or Runner-Up Prize will depend on the overall quantity of submissions received and on the results of the public voting in connection with the Green Videos.
Energy Educator of the Year Award: Four (4) to be awarded (one in each of the following four (4) Canadian regions: Atlantic (NL, PEI, NS, NB), Pacific (BC, AB, SK), Central (MB, ON, QE), Territories (YT, NWT, NT)), each consisting of two-hundred and fifty dollars ($250.00) and a plaque in the winner?s name .
Selection of Potential Winners - Selection of the potential winners will be made by the Judging Panel from all completed and properly submitted nominations (see section 50 of the Rules for nomination requirements).
- The Judging Panel will review each nominee and determine the potential winners based on the following criteria:
- Overall reach (including school and community)
- Effective promotion of energy literacy
- Impact of energy education efforts.
- Anecdotal accounts from the nominator will be evaluated and judged based on a rubric. Scores will not be made public.
- Impact of energy education efforts.
- Upon verification of eligibility, the winners will be notified by electronic mail and telephone on April 30, 2014 by 15:00 EST.
- The Challenge Sponsors will send the Prize to the winners via courier or other secure means as determined by the Challenge Sponsors.
- Chances of winning the Energy Educator of the Year Award will depend on whether a Teacher is nominated and the overall quantity of eligible nominations received in connection with Energy Educator of the Year Award.
WINNER DECLARATION AND AWARDING OF PRIZES - Winners of any Prize will receive no compensation, credit or prizing other than the Prize awarded.
- For all Prizes, the identity of the winners will be determined in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The determination of the winners or potential winners by the Challenge Sponsors or Judging Panel is final without right of appeal or review.
- Before being declared a Challenge winner and receiving a Prize, the Teacher representing a potential winning Classroom and, in the case of the Top School Prize, the principal of the potential winning School, will be required to sign a Declaration of Eligibility and Release form releasing the Challenge Sponsors and each of their associated entities from any and all liability associated with the Challenge or any Prize, and comply will all other Rules for the Challenge.
- In the event that any potential winner does not meet all of the requirements set out in paragraph 61 above, is determined to be ineligible to win a Prize, or is otherwise disqualified from the Challenge, the Challenge Sponsors may select an alternate potential winner in their sole discretion.
- The Challenge Sponsors shall have no obligation to the Challenge winners beyond awarding of Prizes and as otherwise outlined in these Rules.
- All costs, applicable taxes and other fees and expenses not specifically outlined in these Rules and related to any Prize are the sole responsibility of the Prize winners, including without limitation, all costs of licenses, insurance and permits,
- Allow six to eight weeks for delivery of all Prizes.
- Prizes are not transferable no substitutions or equivalents are permitted, except by the Challenge Sponsors at their sole discretion or as otherwise provided in these Rules.
- The Challenge Sponsors may, in their sole discretion, without notice, and for any reason, substitute a Prize, or any portion thereof, with a prize or prizes of equal or greater value.
- By entering the Challenge, all Teachers and participants in Classrooms, as confirmed by the Teacher entering the Classroom in the Challenge, agree a) to be bound by these Rules and the decisions of the Challenge Sponsors and b) to release, indemnify and hold harmless the Challenge Sponsors and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries and independent contractors, directors, officers, shareholders, employees, agents and representatives, including advertising and promotion agencies, from any and all liability for claims/damages, including but not limited to claims/damages for personal injury (including death) or property damage, with respect to or arising from acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any Prize or participation in the Challenge, or for claims based on, publicity rights, defamation, or intrusion of privacy.
- Personal information collected from Teachers by the Challenge Sponsors will only be used and disclosed by the Challenge Sponsors or its affiliates to verify Teacher registrations, administer the Challenge and for internal analysis of entrant demographics and as may be provided in these Rules or in the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge Privacy Policy..
- The Challenge Sponsors will not attempt to contact a Teacher for any other purpose than to administer the Challenge unless the Teacher opted-in at the time of Entry to receive relevant Classroom Energy Diet Challenge-related email communications from the Challenge Sponsors. The Challenge Sponsors respect the privacy of all Teachers who register for the Challenge.
- By entering the Challenge, each Teacher and Classroom participant agrees: (i) that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Challenge or any Prize shall be resolved in accordance with the laws of the Province of Alberta, and (ii) to irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Province of Alberta over any claim or matter arising under or in connection with the Challenge or these Rules.
- For Classrooms and Schools in the Province of Québec, any litigation respecting the conduct or organization of the Challenge may be submitted to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for a ruling. Any litigation respecting the Challenge may be submitted to the Régie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement.
- The Challenge Sponsors shall not be liable for any typographical, human or other error in the printing of Challenge and/or collateral materials, administration of the Challenge, processing of the Entries or in the announcement of the Prize winners or in any other materials or information associated with the Challenge.
- The Challenge Sponsors shall not be liable for late, lost, illegible, incomplete, falsified, tampered with, altered or destroyed Entries and all such Entries are void. In the event it is determined that a Teacher has entered in a fashion not sanctioned by these Rules and/or has submitted more than the number of Entries permitted by these Rules, the Classroom will be disqualified and all of the Entries submitted by the Teacher will be disqualified.
- The Challenge Sponsors reserve the right to terminate or suspend the Challenge or specific Challenge components or to amend these Rules at any time and in any way, without prior notice. Void where prohibited by law.
Early Bird Draw NO PURCHASE NECESSARY - All Teachers that have successfully registered a Classroom at energydiet.canadiangeographic.ca for the 2014 Classroom Energy Diet Challenge by 11:59:59 a.m. EST on November 29, 2013 (the ?Early Bird Closing Date?) will be entered into a random draw for one (1) of two (2) one-hundred dollar ($100.00) prepaid Visa? Gift Cards (the ?Early Bird Prize?).
- One entry per Teacher. Two Prizes available to be won. Chances of winning depend on the number of Teachers who have registered a Classroom in the Challenge by the Early Bird Closing Date.
- Draw will take place on December 2, 2013 at 13:00 EST in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from all Teachers who successfully registered for the Challenge by the Early Bird Closing Date.
- Potential winners will be notified by telephone by 15:00 EST on December 2, 2013 and informed how to collect their Early Bird Prize.
Referral Draw NO PURCHASE NECESSARY - All Teachers registered in the 2014 Classroom Energy Diet Challenge who refer another Teacher that also registers a Classroom for the Challenge by January 19, 2014 at 11:59:59 a.m. EST (the ?Registration Deadline?) will be entered into a draw for one (1) of ten (10) one-hundred dollar ($100.00) prepaid Visa? Gift Cards (each a ?Referral Prize?).
- To refer a Teacher and to be entered into the draw for a Referral Prize, the referred Teacher must, at the time of registering a Classroom in the Challenge, indicate the name of the Teacher who made the referral. The referred Teacher must also be successfully registered for the Challenge.
- The referring Teacher will get one entry into the draw for the Referral Prize for each unique Teacher they refer during the Registration Period. No maximum number of entries. Each entrant is eligible to receive a maximum of one Prize.
- Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received for each Teacher. Teachers will increase the odds of winning by giving more referrals.
