DUBAI CREEK POSTCARD COMPETITION

The British Council, Dubai Municipality, HSBC Bank Middle East, Dubai Airports and thejamjar creative consultancy are delighted to launch the Dubai Creek postcard competition for students.

This competition is held in conjunction with the Rivers of the World exhibition which is taking place at Terminal 3 - Departures, Dubai International from 06 October till 30 January 2014.

Are you a grade 6, 7, 8 or 9 student at a school in the UAE?
Would you like to contribute towards campaigning for Dubai Creek?s inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage site?
You are two steps away from entering our competition.

Step 1: Draw an artwork on a postcard that is inspired by Dubai Creek
Step 2: Write a message to support the Dubai Creek - A UNESCO World Heritage Site campaign.

Dubai Creek – UNESCO World Heritage site campaign

Khor Dubai or Dubai Creek is considered the driving force which led to the thriving development of Dubai over the course of more than 500 years.

The campaign aims to spread awareness on the importance of Khor Dubai to the future generations, shedding light on the role it plays on the economical and the social level.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world which are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity by naming these sites as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Currently, Khor Dubai is listed as a ?nominated? UNESCO World Heritage site and is waiting for approval from UNESCO to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Prize:

  • The entries will be judged by a panel of experts and 20 finalists will be selected
  • The finalists will be invited to the Rivers of the World art workshop which will be facilitated by Mohamed Abedin, an Emirati urban artist. Mo is the founder of the Foo Dog and creator of the Designer Toy MEGA – a 3 dimensional canvas that allows artists to add their individual touch.
  • Each finalist will also be presented with a certificate of excellence
  • Dubai Municipality will use the best twelve entries to support the Dubai Creek UNESCO World Heritage site campaign through the display of the artwork on the Khor Dubai website.

Guidelines:

  • All entries have to be submitted on the postcards distributed by the British Council and thejamjar
  • The competition is open to all students of grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 in the UAE.
  • Material to be used on the postcard are drawing pencil, colour pencil, water based markers and pens only.
  • The drawing must fill up the entire space within the border of the front of the postcard. The art work presented should convey the true memory and identity of Khor Dubai as represented through tangibles such as the creek, traditional souqs, historic buildings, abra?s (traditional boats) and/or intangibles such as the craft of boat making and skills of pearl diving.
  • The message written at the back of the postcard can be in English or in Arabic. It should not exceed 30 words and should be a message to support Dubai Creek?s inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Student and school information have to be completed legibly on the back of the postcard. Information not clearly stated may be disqualified.
  • Only one entry per student is allowed.
  • Competition entries should be submitted by the schools/organisations directly to the addresses provided within the deadline period.
  • Entries to the competition must be submitted by 16:00, 20 October, 2013

Selection Criteria

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Imaginative treatment and thoughtful consideration on the Dubai Creek theme
  • Creativity of visual expression
  • Ability to handle medium and demonstrate technical skill
  • Creative use of language – English or Arabic

Judging:

  • Entries will be judged by a panel made up of members of the British Council, Dubai Municipality, thejamjar and relevant partners.
  • In the event of any dispute regarding the Rules or the conduct, results and all other matters relating to the Competition, the decision of the British Council shall be binding and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.
  • No cash alternative can be substituted for the prize.
  • Winners will be notified directly by the British Council
  • These rules shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and Wales which shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes.
  • Copyright to the entries rests with the entrants however, Dubai Municipality has the right to use the entries to support the campaign and the British Council has the right to use the entries in conjunction with the Rivers of the World exhibition. Parents/Guardians of the first twenty finalists would have to sign a disclaimer permitting the usage of their ward?s artwork in conjunction with the Rivers of the World exhibition and Dubai Municipality?s campaign.
  • The submitted entries will not be returned to the entrants on the conclusion of the competition.

Submission Process

Schools are responsible for collecting and submitting their student submissions by the deadline date in the enclosed envelope. Schools may deliver the envelope to any of the following addresses by 16.00 on 20 October 2013:
