Date: 19/11/2012 to 20/11/2012     Type: Online

UNEP Regional Consultative Meeting (RCM) for Major Groups and Stakeholders  in the West Asia Region

I am participating and representing
TUNZA ECO GENERATION

Meeting Background
On June 4-6 2012, governments, major groups and other stakeholders from around the globe met together in Rio de Janeiro for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development also referred to as the Rio+20 Conference. This event focused on ?Green Economy in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication? and ?the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development.? It sought a new international commitment to Sustainable Development, identified implementation gaps and addressed emerging issues. Its outcome document, ?The Future We Want?, provides a new impetus to the quest for sustainable development agenda as we approach 2015, the target year for the Millennium Development Goals.
The importance of the involvement of major groups and stakeholders was recognized in the ?The Future We Want? with paragraphs 42-55 focusing on the importance of the engagement of major groups and stakeholders in processes of sustainable development and paragraph 88 including references to UNEP and its relationship with major groups and stakeholders. This recognizes the value of major groups and stakeholders to bring knowledge, expertise, a diversity of perspectives and resources as well as advocacy skills to promote environmental priorities and obligations as we embark on the post-2015 development agenda.

This Regional Major Groups and Stakeholders Consultation in 2012, as part of the regional Rio+20 follow-up process, will analyse opportunities and strategic options for major groups and stakeholders in the post-Rio+20 to post-2015 development agenda, also taking account of the 18th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP18) taking place in Doha, Qatar on 26 November to 7 December 2012 (www.unfccc.int).

Overall, it is expected that the Consultation will result in (a) increased awareness and understanding of outcomes of Rio+20 and their implications, (b) greater awareness of the post-2015 development agenda, (c) increased capacity in terms of engaging and lobbying in international negotiations and (d) better inclusion of MGS perspectives into the work of UNEP towards the Global Major Groups and Stakeholder Forum and UNEP Governing Council.

Date and Venue

The Meeting will be held from 19-20 November 2012, and will take place at the Pullman Deira City Centre Hotel.
