They sat the bonfire under a clear sky as they narrated stories and played games late in the night. Now and then, an eerie laughter and cries of the hyenas interrupted their silence. It made the camping experience more real.
These were some of the experience by a group of children and teens during the 2011 Roots & Shoots-Kenya teen?s culture camp, organized by Roots & Shoots-Kenya which brought nearly 200 young people countrywide and which took place at Lemek Conservancy. Koiyaki in Maasai Mara South. A place known for large herds of wildebeests, buffalo, elephants among other animals, was the perfect place for this group of youngster to spend part of their school holidays, interacting and learning more about the nature.
The excited children had arrived by road from the meeting point at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, a journey that exposed them to fantastic sceneries on the floor of Great Rift Valley.
For the children it was great moment to learn more about the insect and small living things found in the Mara. And after being taught more about the insects, the children later helped identify some of those insects, before engaging in coloring activities.
Apart from culture nights, and the group discussions, the kids also took part in a nature walk where they learn about different droppings of the animals and their footprints before touring a nearby Maasai manyatta, where they learned more about the community.
The children also watched a documentary on the Mara River that focused on the migration of the wildebeest, the hunting techniques used by different animals.
