Tashkent¡¯s Air Pollution: Why We Must Act Now

by Asadbek Baxronov | 22-11-2025 23:51 recommendations 0

Air quality in Tashkent has worsened in recent years. During winter, smog and dust often cover the city, making it hard to breathe. Poor air isn¡¯t just a nuisance — it¡¯s a serious threat to health, especially for children, the elderly, and people with illnesses.

The causes are clear: vehicle emissions, coal and fuel use for heating, industrial activity, and limited green spaces. Weather can trap polluted air close to the ground, creating smog that lingers for days. According to a World Bank report (2024), 83% of Tashkent residents live in areas where air pollution is far above safe levels, with PM2.5 averaging 38.8 µg/m©ø, compared to the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m©ø. On some winter days, PM2.5 even reaches 67.5 µg/m©ø, over 18 times higher than recommended. This pollution also harms plants, trees, and local wildlife, disrupting the city¡¯s natural balance.

Air pollution affects everyone¡¯s well-being. Breathing dirty air can cause respiratory and heart problems. The World Bank estimates that this pollution costs Tashkent around US$488 million per year, showing its economic as well as environmental impact.

But change is possible. Youth can make a difference:

  • Use public transport, walk, or cycle when possible.

  • Plant trees and greenery in neighborhoods.

  • Raise awareness in schools and communities.

  • Encourage leaders to adopt cleaner policies.

Clean air is a right, not a privilege. If Tashkent¡¯s youth step forward together, we can push for change. The time to act is now.
