Before the onset of widespread urbanization and industrialization, the Yamuna River flowed in all its natural splendor. It was known for its clear, sparkling waters, and it played a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of countless communities along its banks. People used the river for drinking water, bathing, and irrigation, and its banks were teeming with vibrant flora and fauna. But now it grapples with a distressing predicament – its frothing waters. This unsettling phenomenon has raised numerous environmental issues that demand urgent attention in New Delhi-the capital of India . The froth is a sign of a polluted river . Experts say that the release of untreated or poorly treated effluents including sewage from those part of the city that are not connected to sewage network and industrial waste could lead to frothing. The environmental repercussions of this frothing are extensive and alarming. Aquatic biodiversity is severely impacted, with fish populations dwindling and various species struggling to survive. The foam itself, comprised of harmful chemicals and heavy metals, poses a threat not only to aquatic organisms but also to the surrounding flora and fauna. Moreover, the noxious fumes emitted from the froth contribute to air pollution, affecting the health and well-being of communities residing along the riverbanks. To mitigate these challenges, concerted efforts have been made on multiple fronts.Delhi government has so far spent Rs 2387 crore on 'cleaning' the Yamuna. Neighboring states Haryana and UP were also supposed to spend money on cleaning this river. UP government spent Rs 2052 crore, while the Haryana government spent Rs 549 crore on 'cleaning' Yamuna. Adding all the money spent by these three states, it comes to Rs 4988 crore. But still the Yamuna continues to be a river of filth in Delhi. In conclusion , the frothing Yamuna serves as a poignant reminder of the environmental perils that our society must confront. This issue underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable practices and taking collective action to restore the river to its once-pristine state. By addressing the root causes of pollution, implementing stringent regulations, and fostering a sense of stewardship, we can hope to rejuvenate the Yamuna and safeguard it for generations to come |
