Relation Between Seasonal Fruits and the Environment

Fruits and vegetables are around us at all times in various forms such as juice, foods, and garnish. They are vital for humans to live everyday life and sustain a healthy diet. Through the CLAs method, it is shown that the consumption of fruits that aren't seasonal in the local area negatively affects the environment.

When transporting foods from one country across the world to another, more greenhouse gasses come out compared to when they are transported between the same country. Consequently, it impacts the environment. Researchers have said that out of world's greenhouse gas emissions, 26% of it comes from the *global food system. Although fruits and vegetables cause 10-50 times lower emission than animal products, the fact that they are one of the factors that fastens global warming cannot be overlooked.

Moreover, the nutritional level and health benefits decrease when it is transported from another country. Studies have shown that nutritional value is at max right after it is harvested and it decreases overtime. It takes more time to transport foods from a further distance, so in terms of health, consuming local or seasonal fruits/vegetables are more beneficial.

Buying seasonal fruits not only helps to support the local community, but it also helps to reduce greenhouse gas and the earth to be more healthy. This action might look small compared to other environmental activities shown on social media and News. Yet, this is what leads to significant achievements.

*Global food system is how the people around the globe receive food, including from the production of food to distribution around the world.
