3 Ways to Conserve Water In Your Inground Pool This Summer

Any homeowner who has a pool is no stranger to the care, maintenance costs, and time spent that goes along with it. And if you're considering adding one to your home, these are all important things to keep in mind. Fortunately, the benefits of having a pool typically outweigh these things, making the extra steps on your to-do list more than worth it.

Remember that there are always ways you can make positive changes to your pool, whether it's finding ways to become more eco-friendly, save money, or even save on gym costs. In fact, many people swear by doing pool exercises such as the breaststroke to get rid of a loose sagging arm or improve your cardio stamina.

Whatever your desire for a pool may be, conserving water is a great goal to set. Here are three ways you can do just that.

1. Properly Maintain Your Pool

While you already know that pool maintenance is a must to keep things in tip-top condition, did you know that it also has an impact on its water level? It's true. There's more to having a pool than treating, troubleshooting issues and keeping it clean.

Maintenance will vary depending on the type of pool you own. If you're just starting out and are trying to decide which type makes the most sense for your situation, some quick research on pool types and inground swimming pool costs will be helpful in the process. Making sure you regularly inspect your pool's pump and filter system will ensure cracks and leaks are caught early and repaired, thus saving you from lost water. A critical part of this is making sure everything is in good working order throughout the year, even during the winter months.

2. Use a Solar Cover

Using a solar cover is one of the easiest yet most effective things you can do to conserve water in your pool. In addition to keeping the water temperature comfortable and shielding the water from debris, a solar cover will cut down on lost water from evaporation when the pool is not in use. This alone will make a big difference because you won't have to tax your well or increase your water bill to replace lost volume.  As a bonus, having a solar cover could mean you get more use out of your pool, simply because the water will stay warmer longer. Who wouldn't love that?

3. Understand Its Chemistry

While a swimming pool's purpose is extremely straightforward, you might find that its chemistry is not. Whether you're trying to figure out how to increase or lower the pH or battle suddenly cloudy water, it might seem there's always some sort of puzzle to solve.

Wondering how this is relevant to conserving water? If an issue gets out of hand with your pool, you might have to drain and start over. Since this is the last thing you want to do especially when your goal is to save water, having a handle on pool treatment is essential.

In addition to its chemistry, pay attention to the water temperature as well. If you have a solar cover or a heater, you might find the water becomes too warm. This can also be a cause of evaporation, so stay on top of it. An aerator could do the trick if you're finding this to be a recurring issue.

Conclusion

Conserving water in your inground pool is possible and is simpler to do than you might think. One of the most beneficial things you can do is to get comfortable with pool maintenance and be vigilant about it. Once you work it into your routine, it will become second nature.

However, you don't need to do this all on your own. If you're not comfortable with it or can't commit the time, just contract with a pool care company to make sure nothing skips a beat.
