Small, Sustainable Changes for a Big Environmental Impact

by Paisley Hansen | 21-05-2021 14:33 recommendations 0

Environmentalism is a philosophy no longer reserved for diehard conservationists. More and more, it¡¯s apparent that the day-to-day actions of people worldwide function to either support or harm the wellbeing of the natural world. Today, everyday people have begun to take environmental matters into their own hands.

Steps taken toward a more eco-friendly landscape are not as complicated as they may seem. In fact, just a few simple adjustments to your routine can have a huge impact.

Rethink Transportation

Pollution is a huge contributor to climate change thanks to the modern world¡¯s reliance on the burning of natural resources as fuel. Whenever possible, make your way on foot, use public transportation or ride your bike to get to where you need to go. The exercise and fresh air also do your body some good, too, so just place a Thrive patch on and hit the road.

Make Simple Swaps

Modern conveniences, such as single-use plastic bags and fast food, have made it easier for mankind while putting an undue strain on Mother Nature. Fortunately, eco-friendly alternatives maintain a healthy dose of convenience while protecting the planet.

A few simple swaps include:

  • using a reusable grocery bag,

  • ditching plastic water bottles for an reusable one,

  • switching bottled soap for unpackaged bar soap,

  • forgoing plastic produce bags at the store,

  • using cloth napkins in lieu of paper towels,

  • and using eco-friendly, biodegradable cleaning solutions.

Go Meatless

Animal agriculture significantly disrupts nature¡¯s intrinsic balance by clearing animal habitats for land and resources and contributing to a large portion of greenhouse gases. If switching to a full vegan diet isn¡¯t for you, consider incorporating more meatless meals into your breakfast, lunch and dinner rotation. It¡¯s easier than ever to find healthy, plant-based ideas for the whole family that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

Opt for Paperless Billing

Paper isn¡¯t the perfectly renewable resource it¡¯s been painted out to be. Paper recycling uses a great deal of water and electricity. Most utility companies offer electronic notifications, so you can cut down on the amount of paper your household uses with just a few clicks.

Reduce Consumption

Landfills are filling up at an alarming rate due in large part to overconsumption and wasteful habits. Try to make your purchases mindfully, and only consume what you need. If you know that an impulse buy may just end up in the trash within a few days, or that a very trendy clothing item will just end up in a donation pile in a matter of weeks, consider skipping it entirely.

Conserve Water

Wasted water diverts valuable resources from natural lakes, streams and ponds, and water treatment plants use a great deal of energy and resources to treat and pump water back into the local supply. If you start the shower well before hopping in or leave the faucet running while brushing your teeth, it¡¯s time to kick those bad water habits.

Look Locally

It takes a great deal of resources to transport food and goods across the country. To reduce your household¡¯s carbon footprint, browse local small businesses before heading to other chains or corporate stores to find what you need.

Even better, look to secondhand options before buying new. In the digital age, local e-commerce is easier than ever, and much of the time you can find what you¡¯re looking for in a new or brand new condition.

Environmentally-friendly habits fortunately don¡¯t require much effort, and the greater the number of people who are switching to a more eco-conscious way of life, the greater the positive impact on the planet. With just a few changes, you become part of a collective shift into a more sustainable future.
