Tinospora cordifolia is  a medicinal herb commonly known as Gurjo, heart-leaved moonseed, guduchi or giloy which is a herbaceous vine lies in the family menispermaceae.it is highly distributed to tropical regions of indian subcontinents , Nepal etc. It is a very large , deciduous, extensively- spreading, climbing shrub with several elongated branches.It is a climber shrub whose leaves are simple, alternate, and exstipulate with long petioles upto 15 cm long which are roundish and pulvinate both at the base and apex with the basal one longer and twisted partially and half way around. The female flower are generally solitary whereas male flowers are clustered. It has six sepals in two series of three each. The outer series are smaller than the inner. Fruits of this shrubs are aggregate in clusters of one to three .

This plant is a endophytic fungi which colonize the living , internal tissues of their host symbiotically . Tinospora has been used over the centuary to treat many diseases. Its roots , stems , and leaves are used in Ayurvedic medicine. Tinospora contains diverse  diverse phytochemicals that might affect the body . some of them have antioxidant effects whereas other might have capacity to increase the body¡¯s immune system. It includes  alkaloids , phytosterols , glycosides and other chemicals compound such as cloumbin , tinosporaside , jatrorhizine , palmatine , berberine , tembeterine , tinocordifolioside , phenylpropene disaccharides , choline , tinosporic acid , tinosporal , tinosporon and tinosporide have been isolated from tinospoea cordifolia .

Uses:

Tinospora cordifolia is used for hay fever , athletic performance , diabetes , high cholesterol , upset stomach , gout , an itchy skin infection caused by mites ( scabies ) , and many other conditions , but there is no good scientific evidence that it has any anti – disease effect , and is not used as a prescription drug . most research has been done  in test tubes or in animals . there isn¡¯t enough information to know the effects of Tinospora cordifolia in the human body.

It is insufficient evidence for:

1.   Athletic performance. Early research shows that taking an extract of Tinospora cordifolia stem does not improves speed or strength in healthy men.

 2. Foot sores in people with diabetes. Early research shows that taking Tinospora cordifolia with other medications prescribed by a physician might help foot ulcers due to diabetes to heal faster.

3. Osteoarthritis. Some research shows that taking specific Ayurvedic formulations containing Indian gooseberry, ginger, and Tinospora cordifolia, with or without Boswellia, improves pain and function in people with osteoarthritis.

4. Itchy skin infection caused by mites (scabies). Early research shows that applying a lotion containing Tinospora cordifolia clears the symptoms of scabies. It seems to be as effective as a medication called permethrin lotion.

5. Similarly ,more  evidence is needed to rate the effectiveness of this shrub in the uses for diabetes , fever , gonorrhea , Gout , high cholesterol , liver diseases , stomach ulcer , to counteract a suppressed  immune system , upset stomach.
