Kiwifruit farming

Kiwifruit is vine fruit which is previously called as Chinese gooseberry. It is widely grown in New Zealand, Italy,  USA, Japan etc. Kiwifruit is commercially cultivated at kavre, Dolakha, Illam, Sindupalchowk district in Nepal. Nowadays kiwifruit become one of the major source of income in mid hill and high hill. These can grow on large vine as similar to grapevines in terms of growth habit, fruiting behaviour and training requirements.  It can be grown from 1000 to 1200 meter elevation . It is dioecious plant so only female plant can bear fruit when the male plant is pollinated by male plant. One male plant is required for 8 female plant for pollination.  The stem of fruit are supported by T bars and strong structure to prevent from lodging.  It should be prunned in both summer and winter to remove unnecessary branch. Harvesting should be done on November  .Hayward, Monty,  Bruno, Allison,  Queen beauty are major varieties of kiwifruit. 

Benefits of kiwifruit

1) Kiwifruit helps to prevent blood clotting and manage blood pressure by reducing the amount of fat in blood.

2) It contains high amount of Vitamin C and antioxidant so it helps to control Asthma.

3) It contains high amount of dietary fibre and beneficial for digestion.

4 ) It can help to reduce high blood pressure and prevent from heart attack and stroke.

5) Mascular degeneration is one of the cause of vision loss . studies found that by eating three serving of fruit a day Mascular degeneration was decreased by 36 % .


6) It may support immune function.


7 ) Eating kiwifruit can support the structure of skin and keep it hydrated and healthy. 


Nowadays,  Government of Nepal, different NGO are providing  subsidy  to farmer for cultivation of kiwifruit.  Government should also focus on marketing and post harvest to gain profit from it.
