5 Ways You Can Green Up Your Health and Wellness Routine

Small changes can make a big difference. That applies to pretty much everything, including the environment. Saving the planet isn't the only reason to make the switch to eco-friendly products, however. They are also better for you, which is especially important when you are talking about health and wellness products. After all, you are using them to try and get healthier, so why not go ahead and make sure there are no ingredients that could harm you or the environment while you are shopping? The best place to start making the switch is on the products you use most and, chances are these five categories take up a large portion of your wellness budget.

1. Skin and Hair Care

Staying clean is important, but have you ever really thought about all of the stuff you use on your body each and every day? Start reading the labels and you might be surprised at what goes into your favorite skincare items. Ingredients can be dangerous for you and for the environment. To feel better about scrubbing yourself clean next time, reach for eco-friendly alternatives to some common cleansing products like Castille soap, apple cider vinegar with a couple of drops of Young Living Essential Oils and natural bamboo scrubs for exfoliation.

2. Dental Hygiene

Your dental care regimen will benefit from a makeover, too. Start with a natural toothbrush made out of bamboo or another equally renewable material. Silk dental floss is another excellent choice for keeping teeth and gums clean and healthy. Alternately, you could opt for a water flosser that cleans between teeth with a concentrated stream of water. Instead of wasting plastic used for toothpaste tubes -and who can really get those really empty, anyway?- switch to a gentle tooth powder in a recyclable glass or metal container.

3. Feminine Health

While no one really likes to talk about it, there is a lot of waste in the feminine hygiene industry. Pads and tampons are single-use items and most women can't imagine going a month without them. There are more environmentally-conscious choices, though. Menstrual cups contain your monthly flow inside a flexible silicone cup. They are easy to use and keep clean, plus you can use them month after month. Special period undies can free you up from anything extra at all. Simply wear them like normal underwear and wash them with your laundry. If you still prefer a traditional pad or tampon, look for brands made from natural, organic and unbleached materials.

4. Exercise Essentials

Exercise is great for your health, right? Before you put your face up against that yoga mat for a relaxing stretch, take a minute to think about how it was made. The three most common materials include PVC, TPE and natural rubber. Each one has its own varying degree of sustainability. Cork and bamboo mats are also available, but they may not offer the soft, cushioned experience you are used to. Be sure to check into the sustainability practices of the manufacturer to learn how they operate.

5. Meal Prep Materials

Most people will agree that meal planning and prep can be better for your health. After all, you are less likely to make a trip through the drive-through if you know dinner can be on the table in a few minutes once you get home. Instead of putting your food in disposable bags or plastic containers, use glass and silicone. Most will be able to go from freezer to table in minutes, meaning you'll have food done that much faster, and without the waste of extra baggies.

Taking charge of your health doesn't have to harm the environment. Thanks to increased awareness, there are more eco-conscious options on the market now than ever before. Be sure to check materials, how they are sourced and what happens to byproducts and packaging once you use each item to make an informed choice.
