Adaptation to climate change

As most of us are aware about global warming, temperature fluctuations in our ecosystem and community. These factors have led to the change in global environment and ecosystem leading to change in climatic conditions.

Climate change has led to abrupt disturbance in ecosystem and community in terms of variety of factors. Some of the recorded prime disturbance in ecosystem and community due to climate change are:

Rise in water level due to excessive rainfall and flood .

Shift in onset of monsoon and pre monsoon dates

Change in productivity of crops due to unfavorable climatic condition

Increase in insect and pest population in agricultural ecosystem

Occurrence of fungal, bacterial and virus in farm field which are completely new and are hard to control

Dilemma in calculating the effective calendar dates

The movement of agricultural crops are recorded towards north and weed population exceeds in current south farm fields.

There are other various indirect factors where our ecosystem is disturbed like: loss of biodiversity, reduction in bird count in terms of size and population, change in food habit, increase in competition for food and space.

Do these problems still exist?

Yes of course, these problems still exist but no one is silent. All are working from their top to cope up with these problems. However, still some are unaware to these and do lack in participation.

What are the present activities done by farmers in adopting it?

There are variety of adaptation measures adopted by farmers as per their domain and requirement. Some of them are:

Use of organic mulch to reduce water loss

Use of plastic tunnels (long term prospective) to avoid frost and temperature

Raised beds in planting crops

Go-down are raised high to avoid flood in Terai regions

Farmers are started using plant botanical in some parts to reduce production cost and eco-friendly adaptations.

Other various adaptations include change of crops in farm field, crop rotation, shifting calendar dates, using weather forecasting in harvesting crops.
