Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are synthetic gases that are used in a variety of applications, such as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, solvents, and blowing agents for foam insulation. They are called "hydrofluorocarbons" because they contain hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon. One of the main advantages of HFCs is that they are non-toxic and non-flammable, making them safe to use in many applications. However, HFCs also have a significant drawback: they are potent greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. HFCs are thousands of times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, and their use has been growing rapidly in recent years, especially in developing countries. To address the problem of HFCs and their impact on the climate, the international community has taken action to phase down their use. The most significant agreement on this issue is the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which was adopted in 2016 and calls for a global phase-down of HFCs. Under this agreement, participating countries are taking steps to reduce their HFC consumption and transition to more climate-friendly alternatives.
