Water is a precious natural resource. Access to clean water is vital. Unfortunately, many of the things that we as humans do every day that leads to the pollution of our water supply. The sad fact is that we often do these things without even thinking. Here are six things that you can do to help reduce your contribution to water pollution. Use More Natural Cleaning SuppliesMany conventional cleaning supplies contain harsh chemicals. Many of these chemicals are harmful to your health and skin. They¡¯re also bad for the environment. Letting them go down the drain can contribute to water contamination. Instead of buying these chemicals, look for cleaning supplies that contain natural or biodegradable ingredients. Or, consider making your own. Avoid Pouring Grease Down the DrainPouring fat or grease down the drain can lead to clogs. If this happens, you could be left with water backing up into your home or yard. Not only that, but the oil can contaminate local water supplies. Dispose of grease and fat in the garbage with solid waste instead. Dispose of Medical Supplies ProperlyOne of the most common solutions for getting rid of old medications that you no longer need is to flush them down the toilet. While convenient, pharmaceuticals can then end up in the water supply. Don¡¯t throw them away whole, either. You have a few options when it comes to safely getting rid of old medications. The best option is to check with your local pharmacy. Some have programs or disposal kiosks. Another option is to grind up the medication and mix it with another material like kitty litter and throw it in the trash bin. Reduce Meat ConsumptionRaising animals for meat requires a lot of water. Not only do the animals need water to drink, but water is also required to grow their food. Additionally, antibiotics required to keep the animals ¡°healthy¡± and animal waste can end up in the water supply. Reducing meat consumption doesn¡¯t mean that you have to go vegan. While it may be considered the ideal, it¡¯s not an easy step for everyone to take. Designate one or two days a week where you don¡¯t eat any meat or animal products. Meatless Mondays are a great place to start. As you get used to living without meat, you can add more days where you skip animal products or significantly reduce your portion sizes. Use Alternative Energy SourcesConventional electricity, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy sources all require a substantial amount of water to produce. To reduce your water use and pollution, consider investing in alternative energy sources such as Tampa Bay solar or wind. Not only does solar energy not require any water to produce, but companies require very little water to manufacture the panels. There is no risk to local water supplies and operations don¡¯t strain or compete with drinking water, agriculture, or other vital needs. Be Careful with Lawn CareA gorgeous, well-kept yard does more than just increase curb appeal. It creates a pleasant place to spend time with friends and family. Many people use herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers to keep their lawns looking great. While effective, these chemicals get into the water supply and cause contamination. Some ways to keep your lawn looking its best include:
Having access to clean water is essential. These steps can help to reduce water pollution, ensuring more clean water for everyone. |
