The Fiesty flying squirrel, also called the magic cat, is the hero of every villager's spooky story. The acrobatic animal¡¯s long-drawn calls that rend the still night air, make villagers¡¯ hair stand on end. The scream is unlike the typical sharp, repetitive staccato sounds made by other squirrel species. It¡¯s a cross between a wail and a croak. Like a baby¡¯s cry;they can keep calling for more than half an hour. The spooked people imagine a terrifying creature of supernatural powers haunting the forest. They¡¯d be surprised the shriek belongs to a nondescript squirrel.
There are about 46 species of Flying Squirrels found in the world and they are grouped under one tribe, i.e. the Petauristini tribe. Asia has the distinction of being home to most of the species. Flying Squirrels don¡¯t actually fly, but glide from one tree to the other. They basically use their patagium, a membrane stretching from the wrist (forelegs) to the ankle (hind legs), to glide. Once airborne, these squirrels use their arms, legs, and tail to effectively navigate and move from one tree top to another. Flying Squirrels of Northeast India are declining due to habitat loss from large-scale tree felling, plus threats like excessive traditional hunting. Flying Squirrels are almost on the edge of extinction due to neglect and habitat loss.Flying squirrels often have accidents, since gliding at night can be challenging without the benefit of landing lights. People have seen their carcass impaled on bamboo and others hanging from power lines. It isn¡¯t uncommon to find that they had crash-landed. The diminishing number of flying squirrels which are adapted to dense forests just points to the fact that the forest area in coutries are far below than what is required to maintain a balance in the ecosystem. We need to replenish forests and trees , so that these feisty yet harmless nocturnal creatures can thrive too. Beyond adorability of the Squirrels around us. The role it plays to preserve and protect the environment overlooked altogether and thereby ignored. Despite of the fact that this species belongs to the rodent category yet it helps in renewal of many tree species in forests. To acknowledge the role that Squirrels play in nature and the environment .Squirrel Appreciation Day is celebrated January 21 every year world over. |
