Untreated Wastewater:A question for COVID-19 spread?

by Anjila Pandey | 19-04-2020 23:07 recommendations 0

Human stool is said to be one of the modes of transmission for COVID-19 ,which has been confirmed by a recent study. There has been a First Confirmed detection of SARS-CoV-2 in untreated wastewater in Australia, which has managed enough to be a proof of concept for the wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 in the community.

HIGHLIGHTS of the study
-The study has been the earliest to report the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater in Australia.
-The presence of SARS-CoV-2 was confirmed by sequencing.
-A median range of 171 to 1090 infected persons was identified in the catchment.
-However further methodological and molecular assay validation will be required.

Information and awareness on the safety measures  to prevent contact with cough, saliva, mucus or any other contact with COVID-19 infected people is rapidly and enormously being disseminated.  Now, Stool has been an additional topic of limelight as well. The virus has been detected in the untreated wastewater, which is many ways has peaked up the spread of infection via stool of infected cases. This has been an issue of urgency in the global scenario for sure.Addressing haphazard wastewater and sewage management is compulsory now.

Our country,Nepal with its pitiful condition of water pollution,is not less vulnerable at all. Water resources, here are highly contaminated with biological waste including human stool undoubtedly. Therefore, Waste water surveillance is a brilliant strategy to encounter the virus transmission, and a must activity to be executed ASAP. This step might contribute to trace the virus spread soon before the actual mishappening, preventing the spread and saving many lives.
