EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN AMPHIBIANS |
---|
by Meena Pandey | 23-09-2019 01:46 0 |
Amphibian life histories are exceedingly sensitive to temperature and precipitation, and there is good evidence that recent climate change has already resulted in a shift to breeding earlier in the year for some species. Future climate change will cause further declines of some amphibian species. Reduced soil moisture could reduce prey species and eliminate habitat. Reduced snowfall and increased summer evaporation could have dramatic effects on the duration or occurrence of seasonal wetlands, which are primary habitat for many species of amphibians. Climate change may be a relatively minor cause of current amphibian declines, but it may be the biggest future challenge to the persistence of many species, Several studies have demonstrated trends towards breeding earlier by some species of amphibians. The breeding in amphibians take place earlier than it should be. It affects in the gametogenesis process in the animals. The trend toward earlier breeding by amphibians in recent years is not universal. Climate change has been considered a potential cause of population decline since the beginning of the current spate of concern about the status of amphibians (Wyman, 1990).The consequences of climate change kills eggs and tadpoles by premature drying of breeding ponds, but the explanation for the subsequent disappearance of adult toads was not apparent. The different mechanism caused as a result of climate change and different harmful radiations also affect the amphibians. Desiccation of frog eggs laid in leaf litter, ,desiccation of frog legs laid in soil, tadpole behavioral changes due to the dissolved in sufficient oxygen, increased tadpole mortality due to dissolved insufficient oxygen. Similarly, the adults face increased susceptibility of diseases, fresh water turtle habitat loss, decreased mass due to increased metabolism, reduced performances ,altered behavior ,increased competition and change in population composition. Even if the most optimistic projections of the IPCC come into fruition ,the next 50 years will see severe alterations of ecosystem function that humankind depends on for our basic needs. Global climate change has influenced many aspects of biology and ecology of amphibians which causes decline in the populations and creates the serious threats. However, evidence suggests that the phenomena does not directly affect the organisms, but acts with combination of biotic and non-biotic factors increasing the effects. It is quiet possible that we cannot do anything against climate change, but still can decide based on scientific evidence ,what, when and how to do about it. |
